Etymology

The name comes from the genus Cistus, which was given to these plants by Joseph Pitton de Tournefort. It is fairly close to the forms used in Greek and Latin antiquity (in ancient Greek, κίσθος, and in Latin, cisthos in Pliny). "Ciste" is a Frenchization of the Greek kistos, "box, capsule", which evokes the shape of the fruit.
