Etymology

The name comes from the genus Cistus, which was given to these plants by Joseph Pitton de Tournefort. It is quite similar to the forms used in ancient Greek and Latin (in ancient Greek, κίσθος, and in Latin, cisthos according to Pliny). “Ciste” is the French adaptation of the Greek kistos, meaning “box, capsule,” which refers to the shape of the fruit.
