2020 marks 800 years of Montpellier Medical University
The year 2020 marks 800 years of the Université de Médecine de Montpellier. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the organization of the celebrations marking the 800th anniversary of the founding of the Université de Médecine de Montpellier, with, ironically, the celebrations scheduled to end at the end of 2021, as in 1921.
These celebrations were an opportunity to recall the singular position of the Faculty of Medicine of Montpellier as the oldest medical university, following receipt of the status of Universitas medicorum granted by the apostolic legate Conrad d'Urach on August 17, 1220, and to communicate the values handed down from generation to generation by our Faculty of Medicine, whose Hippocratic doctrine remains more relevant than ever.
By 1220, Montpellier had become a multicultural and tolerant ecosystem, facilitating the emergence of a university.
In 1220, medicine was recognized as a discipline on a par with theology, law and philosophy. The Middle Ages saw the birth of numerous faculties in Europe. But it was in Montpellier that the first medical university was established, for a variety of geopolitical reasons, and above all because of the multicultural and tolerant ecosystem present at the time. The notion of a university implies the notion of a unit for the production, certification and dissemination of knowledge, a notion that takes on its full value in the light of current scientific mistrust. The university remains the guarantor of knowledge, and is by definition in symbiosis with its territory, the city of Montpellier, one feeding off the other over the centuries.
Our Hippocratic tradition, more relevant than ever
Our Hippocratic Faculty places the patient at the heart of the system, but its teaching has always been based on observation and research. This explains the wealth of teaching and research tools that make up our incomparable heritage, namely the anatomy conservatory, the Atger museum, the treasures of the historical library, the importance of anatomy and its collections, and the Jardin des Plantes. This excellence in teaching and research continues at the start of the 21st century, as demonstrated by the new simulation-based teaching facilities, as well as our commitment to the well-being of all and to ethics.
An important anniversary for our community
This shows how important it is for our medical and university communities, and for all Montpellier residents, to celebrate 800 years of medical history. The program of celebrations was presented on December 19, 2019, organized by the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Montpellier and Montpellier City Council, with the participation of all local authorities. The program was prepared under the aegis of the 800th anniversary steering committee, chaired by Professor Lavabre Bertrand, with a large number of participants, whose preparatory meetings enabled the expression of many projects, expressing the importance of these celebrations for our community.
More than 36 events marked our anniversary
The celebrations began in January 2020 and ended in December 2021. In all, more than 36 symposia, events and exhibitions enabled every doctor, every academic and every Montpellier resident to celebrate these 800 years, each in his or her own field. In addition to the books published, these events led to the production of 6 films or television programs, not to mention the numerous radio broadcasts and articles in the national and regional press on these celebrations. We may have regretted the impossibility of gathering in large numbers, but these 800 years will leave a testimony for future generations through this program, writings, films, commemorative plaques, works or statues, but also through the 800 years section of the Faculty of Medicine website, thanks to the energy and professionalism of Mrs Minard and her teams. You'll be able to relive, discover and share in this marvellous adventure as you read these richly illustrated pages.
Thank you to all: contributors, partners, supporters, the public
We would like to thank the entire medical community for their participation in these celebrations, which bear witness to their attachment to our centuries-old medical school and, above all, to its spirit. Thanks also to all our supporters, partners and institutions who have helped us in this undertaking. And last but not least, thanks to all those who came to attend these events.
Long live the Montpellier-Nîmes Faculty of Medicine!
