  • A LONG HUMANISTIC TRADITION

From Henri Haguenot to collector Xavier Atger, via Chaptal, Prunelle, and Barthez, the richness of Montpellier’s medical library is also a testament to the great humanists who built it beginning in the second half of the 18th century. Whether through personal donations, bequests, purchases, or revolutionary confiscations, this encyclopedic collection
reflects a strong commitment to making “the best works written on each subject” (Prunelle) available to physicians, students, and the general public alike.

  • AN EXHIBITION FOCUSING ON THE FORMATION OF THE BUHM COLLECTION

By visiting this exhibition, visitors were able to learn about the history of the library, from its earliest beginnings—the 1767 bequest of the personal library of Henri Haguenot, a physician and professor of medicine—to its considerable expansion into many fields of knowledge following the French Revolution, at the instigation of Gabriel Prunelle.
