What is it?

A "césure" is a period of up to one year during which a student enrolled in a higher education program temporarily suspends it in order to gain personal experience, either independently or with a host organization in France or abroad.

It is important to remember that a gap year is not a parallel path to a diploma course.

Special provision for PASS and LAS1 students : in accordance with the University's R3E, the gap year system is only applicable to one academic year. Consequently, no application for a semester break will be accepted. In addition, as repeating a year is not permitted in PASS and LAS1, and the gap year counts as one enrolment, any student who decides to apply for a gap year in one of these two courses will be reintegrated at the end of his or her gap year, not in PASS or LAS1, but in L1 with the exhaustion of a chance to apply for PASS, as provided for in the amended decree of November 4, 2019.

The student can apply for the gap year in the following way:

  • Training in a field other than that of the registration course ;
  • Civic service commitment (voluntary civic service commitment, voluntary service, European voluntary service
    service, European voluntary service, firefighters' civic service) ;
  • Setting up a business as a student-entrepreneur ;
  • Personal experience ;
  • Work experience: work experience can be assessed on the basis of an employment contract
    employment contract (CDD), volunteer contract or internship agreement.

Application dates

    Abroad Full academic year or 1st semester (Odd) No later than 01/09.
    In France Full academic year or 1st semester (Odd) Before the start of lessons and no later than 15/09.
    Abroad or in France 2nd semester (Pair) Before the start of the even-numbered semester and no later than 15/12.

    Incomplete applications or those submitted after the deadline will not be accepted.

  • The student's motivation with regard to his or her project

  • The shape of the caesura

  • Supervision by the host organization

The response to the gap-year request is formalized in a letter stating the reasons.

Putting together a gap-year application

Reminder: the gap year corresponds to one semester or academic year (from 01/09 to 31/08 maximum).

It may not be less than one academic semester, nor more than two consecutive semesters.

In the event of departure abroad, regardless of the type of gap year, the following form must be completed: Student Departure Form

The application is submitted for review. It is forwarded to the President of the University for decision.

The response to the gap-year request is formalized in a reasoned letter. In the event of an unfavorable decision, the letter specifies the appeal procedures and deadlines.

If the UM President's decision is favorable, a gap-year agreement will be drawn up in duplicate. This agreement guarantees that the student will retain the benefit of his or her authorization to enroll in the UM program obtained prior to the gap year.
