18th edition of the Festival des Architectures Vives

The 2024 Festival des Architectures Vives, taking place June 11–16 in Montpellier, promises a unique immersion in the world of contemporary architecture. Organized by the Champ Libre association, this event aims to raise public awareness of the diversity and creativity of today’s architecture.

Living Architectures—ephemeral and evolving by nature—transform urban spaces into venues for artistic expression. They offer an immersive sensory and visual experience, inviting everyone to rediscover their everyday surroundings from a new perspective. These ephemeral creations, designed by teams of architects, landscape architects, and urban planners, transform spaces into lived environments where the past, present, and future converge.

In this Olympic year, the festival explores the relationship between architecture, the body, and movement. Inspired by the idea that body and mind are inseparable, the festival highlights how architecture can interact with movement and structure. The FAV will explore the capacity of these new, dynamic architectures—through their unique compositions and rhythms—to resonate with the space and the envelope of the courtyards that host them, each of which possesses a distinct layout. It will also be an opportunity to experiment with how the way we move through these spaces establishes a dialogue with the visitor and serves as a “vector” of architecture—a dynamic that creates the opportunity to generate an event.

The opening ceremony on June 10 will kick off a week filled with architectural discoveries. Visitors will have the opportunity to take part in guided tours, attend the festival’s official opening, and explore interactive installations such as “À vos briques.” This installation invites visitors to actively participate by moving bricks to create an ever-changing architectural landscape.

MAMA Landscape Architecture and Urban Designs, represented by Marine Manchon, Hilda Aguirre Leon, and Belen Alvarez Moreno, is an urban planning, landscape architecture, and architectural firm based in Barcelona. With a decade of experience at renowned firms such as MVRDV, West 8, and Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura, MAMA is committed to creating welcoming and dynamic urban environments while addressing the challenges of sustainable development and quality of life in modern cities. The MAMA team will bring their expertise to the Festival des Architectures Vives with their installation “À vos briques.”

“À vos briques” highlights the terracotta brick through an interactive, evolving installation designed specifically for the festival. Made entirely of bricks, this installation celebrates the beauty and simplicity of this sustainable material while awakening the architect and the child within each of us. During the six days of the festival, visitors will be invited to participate in a playful, co-creative process by deconstructing and reconstructing the installation as they see fit. This transformation will be visible from the balcony overlooking the courtyard of the School of Medicine, turning a traditional, static space into a dynamic, evolving landscape. After the festival, the approximately 9,000 bricks used for the “À vos briques” installation will be reused on a construction site.

The 2024 Festival des Architectures Vives is shaping up to be a must-attend event for all architecture and design enthusiasts, promising an immersive and enriching experience. Through its temporary installations and artistic interventions, the festival offers a fresh perspective on contemporary architecture and invites everyone to explore the many facets of this evolving art form.
