International Rare Disease Day: a gathering for awareness and innovation

On February 29, 2024, the Montpellier Faculty of Medicine will host a round table discussion to celebrate International Disease Day with a program rich in discussion and sharing.

The event, co-organized by the Montpellier-Nîmes rare disease expertise platform and Occitanie rare diseases, will begin at 9:30 a.m . in the "Rondelet" amphitheater.

The morning will feature a scientific round table discussion on rare diseases, introduced by Dean Isabelle Laffont and the research department of the University Hospital Center.

Including contributions from various experts, such as:

  • David Geneviève and Sophie Dancygier, "Rare Diseases and Innovation"
  • Célia Cardoso, "the voice of the sick person"
  • Kévin Yauy: "AI to solve diagnostic dead ends in rare diseases"
  • Christian Jorgensen: "Therapeutic innovation for autoimmune diseases"
  • Amaria Baghdadli: "MARIANNE Cohort: Autism and Rare Diseases"

Following these presentations, there will be discussions and exchanges with the audience.

The afternoon will be devoted to a stroll through the city of Montpellier (2:30-4:00 p.m.: Walk in the colors of rare diseases between Place du Peyrou and Place de la Comédie, dress code: PINK,PURPLE, BLUE , GREEN), followed by 5:00-7:00 p.m.: Association Village and finally the Hépatik Girlshow ,between 7pm and 10pm at Montpellier City Hall (meeting room – free).

This event aims to raise awareness and provide information on issues related to rare diseases, highlighting innovation, the voices of patients, the use of artificial intelligence for diagnosis, therapeutic innovation, and research cohorts on autism and rare diseases.

A rare disease affects approximately 1 in 20 people in the general population, or just over 3 million French people to date. Living with a rare disease means living outside the norm in all aspects of life, which can lead to a strong sense of isolation.
