A little over a year ago, on February 8, 2023, the Nîmes Faculty of Medicine began its expansion and restructuring work. Inaugurated in 1972 under the auspices of Dean Bénézech, who was the first Dean of the Montpellier-Nîmes Faculty, and Professor Harant, who was one of the first teachers in Nîmes. After several years of construction, the expansion of the site now meets three major objectives: expansion, development, and diversification, in order to provide an optimal environment for training, care, and health research.

Designed by Lyon-based architect Nicolas C. Guillot, the new building subtly evokes a tissue reticulum thanks to its metal mesh, which acts as sun protection on the south side and determines the overall appearance of the structure. Its design echoes the theme of the epidermis. The exterior colors are inspired by the natural tones of the site: light ochre, stone tones for the plaster, light gray for the metalwork, and natural wood for the cladding.

Beyond architectural considerations, the expansion and restructuring of the site have enabled the introduction of a modern educational approach. The new simulation-based teaching center, SimHU Nîmes, marks a significant advance in the training of future healthcare professionals. Covering an area of 1,000 square meters, this center offers 10 pre-equipped simulation rooms, allowing students to immerse themselves in realistic medical situations before encountering them in a clinical setting.

This extension has created an additional 1,434 m² of floor space and restructured an additional 1,336 m², including the creation of 17 new classrooms and three lecture halls, thereby promoting an environment conducive to learning. In addition, a student living space of over 200 m² has been created, as well as a 1,000 m² outdoor pine forest, offering students a place to relax and socialize.

The expansion of the Faculty of Medicine in Nîmes represents a true transformation, offering a cutting-edge educational environment and a welcoming setting for students and healthcare professionals, thereby contributing to the attractiveness and excellence of medical training in the region.
