Prevention and Response: Students Trained to Better Understand Sexual Violence.

The Montpellier-Nîmes School of Medicine is launching a new two-hour training program for second-year medical students. Led by Carine Bécamel, a faculty advisor specializing in gender-based and sexual violence and a neurobiologist, alongside Dr. Laurent Martrille, a forensic pathologist and court-appointed expert, and Dr. Olivier Mathieu, a toxicologist and court-appointed expert, this training course aims primarily to inform students about the steps to take in the event of a sexual assault.

In addition, it aims to raise participants’ awareness of the importance of early biological testing in such situations, as well as the harmful consequences of excessive use of psychoactive substances.

To illustrate these points, specific examples of court cases involving rape or sexual assault were presented. These cases helped explain to the students the often difficult journey victims face, as well as the principles of a criminal trial.
