A look back at the commemoration of November 11, 1918

The School of Medicine paid tribute to its deceased members during a ceremony held on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, in the Atrium of the historic building. This moment of reflection, marked by remembrance and respect, is part of the tradition of commemorating the Armistice of November 11, 1918.

The ceremony began at 12:45 p.m. Ms. Isabelle Laffont, Dean of the Faculty, opened the event with a speech highlighting the importance of preserving our history, particularly for an institution like ours, whose history is deeply intertwined with that of the country.

Three biographies of medical students who died in combat were then presented:

  • Pierre Benoît, a resident at the Avignon maternity ward, whose research focused on repeat cesarean sections. The presentation was given by Juan Pujol, Vice Dean for Student Affairs.

  • Paul Raynal, a native of Vergèze, was laid to rest in his hometown. A tribute to him was read by Victorine Rech, president of Corpo Crocos, representing the Nîmes chapter.

  • Maurice Raymond, born and buried in Sète. His biography was presented by Raphaël Brun, president of Corpo ACM, representing the Montpellier chapter.

Wreaths were laid by, among others:

  • Mathys Dubel, representing the student body, alongside the Dean;

  • Cédrine Combis, student representative, accompanied by Mr. Eddy Lamou, the Dean’s clerk.

At the conclusion of this moment, the Dean called for a moment of silence with the words, “For the dead!”

The Montpellier Student Symphony Orchestra (OSEM) then performed the piece “Aux Morts!”, followed by a moment of silence and then the national anthem in its version rewritten for chamber orchestra. The flag bearers accompanied these solemn moments with their movements, paying deep respect to the fallen.

The ceremony concluded with remarks by the Dean, who thanked everyone in attendance and invited the audience to enjoy a buffet lunch.
