Educational visits to the Jardin des Plantes for residents of UNAPEI 34 homes

Montpellier's Jardin des Plantes and Unapei 34 are joining forces to offer residents of Beaurevoir homes an experience at the heart of nature. The five educational visits, scheduled from January to May 2025, will take place either in the Jardin des Plantes grounds, or in the home itself if it has a garden or vegetable patch. The initiative aims to raise awareness of biodiversity and gardening practices, while promoting social inclusion.

Unapei 34 is an association that supports people with mental or psychological disabilities. This partnership with the Jardin des Plantes enables 20 residents to take part in visits supervised by professionals.

Two themes are proposed:

  • The vegetable garden, supervised by Jean-François Fauveau, deputy head of cultivation at the Jardin.
  • Biodiversity, with biodiversity expert Denis Nespoulous, who will accompany residents to different areas of the Garden.

These visits will take place from Tuesday to Saturday, and will be supervised by a monitor-educator from Unapei 34 and by professionals from the Jardin des Plantes.

This initiative is based on a strong desire for inclusion and accessibility. Far from being mere visits, these encounters enable residents to familiarize themselves with plants, experiment with gardening and gain a better understanding of environmental issues. An opportunity to enhance their autonomy and well-being.

The partnership between the Jardin des Plantes and Unapei 34 could well be a long-term one. Indeed, at the end of the year, a review will be carried out to assess the impact of these visits and consider their renewal for years to come.
