Educational tours for residents of UNAPEI 34 group homes at the Botanical Garden

The Jardin des Plantes in Montpellier and Unapei 34 are teaming up to offer residents of the Beaurevoir care homes an experience in the heart of nature. Through five educational visits, these scheduled outings from January to May 2025 will take place either within the Jardin des Plantes grounds or at the residential home if it has a garden or vegetable patch. This initiative aims to raise participants’ awareness of biodiversity and gardening practices while promoting their social inclusion.

Unapei 34 is an organization that supports people with intellectual or mental disabilities. This partnership with the Jardin des Plantes allows 20 residents to take part in guided tours led by professionals.

Two themes are offered:

  • The vegetable garden, supervised by Jean-François Fauveau, assistant head of cultivation at the Garden.
  • Biodiversity, with Denis Nespoulous, a biodiversity expert, who will guide residents through different areas of the Garden.

These tours will take place from Tuesday through Saturday and will be led by an educational instructor from Unapei 34 as well as staff from the Jardin des Plantes.

This initiative is driven by a strong commitment to inclusion and accessibility. Far from being mere visits, these sessions allow residents to learn about plants, try their hand at gardening, and gain a better understanding of environmental issues. It’s an opportunity to enhance their independence and well-being.

The partnership between the Jardin des Plantes and Unapei 34 may well be a long-term one. In fact, at the end of the year, an assessment will be conducted to evaluate the impact of these visits and consider continuing them in the years to come.
