A Look Back at Professor Jean-Pierre Dedet’s Lecture on the Faculty of Medicine’s Portrait Collection

On Friday, June 12, 2026, the Montpellier Society for the History of Medicine concluded its annual lecture series with a presentation by Professor Jean-Pierre Dedet titled: “The Collection of Painted Portraits of Professors at the Montpellier Faculty of Medicine, from the 17th Century to the Present.”

Through this presentation, the audience was able to discover one of the most remarkable heritage collections at the Montpellier School of Medicine. Consisting of 245 oil portraits on canvas, it chronicles several centuries of academic and medical history.

This collection includes 239 portraits of men and a single portrait of a woman, that of Amélie Bouisson-Bertrand. It also includes multiple copies of certain portraits: three portraits appear twice, and one portrait appears three times.

Professor Jean-Pierre Dedet will soon publish an article on this subject in an upcoming issue of *Nunc Monspeliensis Hippocrates*.
