PASS – LAS

ACCESS TO HEALTH STUDIES, HIGH SCHOOL INFORMATION

IN A NUTSHELL - PASS or LAS?

The reform of health studies programs, which took effect at the start of the 2020–2021 school year, provides for two pathways to health studies: the PASS and the LAS. High school students can therefore choose from several tracks designed to allow them, once they become college students, to apply twice to health studies programs:

The PAcourse  SSpecific Access SHealth Program called PASS whose curriculum is offered by the Montpellier-Nîmes School of Medicine and its Department of Midwifery, the School of Pharmacy, and the School of Dentistry, with a required minor in one of the disciplines listed below.

! You cannot repeat the PASS year!

! Administrative registration in PASS automatically counts as an MMOP application ( unless the registration is canceled within the required time frame)!

PASS allows you to apply to the MMOP-K-I programs (Medicine, Midwifery, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Nursing).

OR

The LB.A.s with a “Accès SHealth” LAS are bachelor’s degree programs in various disciplines offered by the following universities: University of Montpellier, University of Montpellier Paul Valéry, University of Perpignan, Nîmes University, and University of Mayotte. Below is a list of these LAS 1 programs.

! You cannot repeat the first year of LAS!

L.AS allows students to apply to the MMOP (Medicine, Midwifery, Dentistry, Pharmacy) and K (Physical Therapy) programs, subject to certain conditions.

INTRODUCTION TO THE PASS

SPECIFIC PATHWAY TO HEALTHCARE ACCESS

IN BRIEF

With the elimination of the PACES program, the PASSthe “Health Sciences” Specialized Track—has become one of the two main pathways to health sciences programs.

At the University of Montpellier, the PASS allows students to apply to the following health-related programs: Medicine, Midwifery, Dentistry, Pharmacy (MMOP), Physical Therapy (K), and Nursing (I: courses for which are taught at the IFSI—Institute for Nursing Education).

The PASS year consists of a two-part program: a health major(referred to as a “major” because it accounts for the majority of the year’s ECTS credits: 49 out of a total of 60), comprising several course units (UE), all in the health field (chemistry-biochemistry, physiology, cellular and molecular biology, physics, pharmacology, etc.), 1 ECTS for the English course; as well as a required disciplinary minor, worth 10 ECTS, comprising courses outside the health field. This disciplinary minor corresponds to the options/sub-choices to be selected in Parcoursup, from among all the options offered at the University of Montpellier. This minor allows students, in the event they are not admitted to MMOPKI but after successfully completing the PASS year, to continue their studies toward a LAS 2 and to have the opportunity to apply a second time for admission to health studies.

! You cannot repeat the PASS year!

! Administrative registration in PASS automatically counts as an MMOP application ( unless the registration is canceled within the required time frame)!

  • Access Information

Applications for the PASS program can be submitted during the senior year of high school or after earning a high school diploma.

For the French general track baccalaureate, senior year grades are taken into account, with particular weight given to the following specialized courses (if at least one of the two chosen specializations is a science specialization (Physics-Chemistry, SV, or Mathematics)): Physics-Chemistry / Life / Mathematics / History, Geography, Geopolitics, and Political Science / Humanities, Literature, and Philosophy / Economic SciencesEconomics and Social Sciences.

Applications are submitted through Parcoursup or a DAP (Preliminary Admission Application). For more information, please visit the “ Applications/Registration” page.

  • Place of Study

At theUniversity of Montpellier, it is possible to enroll in the PASS program and thus take all the courses corresponding to this year of study at the Faculty of Medicine (Arnaud de Villeneuve Health Campus in Montpellier, or Health Campus in Nîmes) and at the Faculty of Pharmacy (Flahault Campus in Montpellier).

The curriculum is exactly the same across all campuses. Classes are held in person or via live or recorded broadcasts.

  • Duration of Studies

The PASS program runs for one year.

It is not possible to repeat the PASS program. At the end of the PASS year, there are three possible scenarios:

    1. The student has successfully completed the PASS program and been admitted; he is now moving on to the second year of the MMOPKI program.
    2. The student successfully completed the PASS year (60 ECTS) during the first exam session but was not admitted to the MMOPKI program; or successfully completed the PASS year during the second exam session: the student advances to LAS 2, corresponding to the track selected on Parcoursup.
    3. The student has not successfully completed their PASS year: they must switch to the L1 program through Parcoursup

Students who complete the LAS program after completing the PASS program will have one and only one new opportunity to apply for theMMOPK admission exams.

  • Exams and Admission to the Preparatory Year

There are two exam periods during the PASS year: the first, in early January, covers Semester 1, and the second, in April–May, covers Semester 2.

Admission to the MMOP program is contingent upon successful completion of the PASS year (earning 60 ECTS credits, as determined by the initial assessment). This completion is determined by averaging the grades from all course units (UEs) to achieve the required average.
However, to be eligible for the admission phase, students must also have successfully completed the Common Health Course Unit (UE Santé Commune), which consists of three course components (ECUE) totaling 12 ECTS credits. To pass the Common Health Course Unit, students must achieve a passing grade in each of the three ECUE components.

Once these prerequisites have been met, the student moves on to theadmissions phase, which consists of two sets of exams:

    • An initial exam based on the results of the PASS year, which grants direct admission to MMOP to applicants who score above a threshold set by the admissions committee. This initial exam accounts for 0 to 50% of the available spots in each program.
    • and a second, oral exam (for MMOP-K only) for students who were not admitted directly but who achieved a sufficient score on the first exam. This second exam accounts for 50 to 100 percent of the available spots in each program.
  • Career Opportunities

Students who successfully complete their PASS program will be able to enter the second year of health studies at the University of Montpellier, based on their preferences and grades, in:

    • Medicine (School of Medicine, Montpellier and Nîmes campuses)
    • Maieutics (Department of Maieutics, Montpellier and Nîmes campuses)
    • Dentistry (Faculty of Dentistry, Montpellier Campus)
    • Pharmacy (Faculty of Pharmacy, Montpellier Campus)
    • Physical Therapy (Montpellier and Perpignan Centers)
    • Nursing Sciences (Institute of Nursing Education)

If not admitted, students may continue on to LAS 2 (provided they have successfully completed the PASS year) in the bachelor’s degree program corresponding to the track they selected in Parcoursup. ( LAS 2 TrackPASS Tracks/Minors)

INTRODUCTION TO THE LAS

BACHELOR'S DEGREE WITH A HEALTHCARE TRACK

  • LAS—WHAT IS IT?

Bachelor’s degree programs that provide access to health-related fields(LAS) arefirst-, second-, or third-year bachelor’s degree programs that allow students to apply for admission to the second year of study in Medicine, Midwifery, Dentistry, or Pharmacy (MMOP). These programs are specified for each partner university in the tables above.

The LAS1 program also allows students to apply for the first time to a physical therapy program.

The LAS 2 program also allows former PASS and LAS 1 students who have already submitted an initial application for the Physical Therapy (K) program to submit a second application.

A LAS (Bachelor’s Degree Providing Access to Healthcare) can take the form of:
LOSI: LAS with an Integrated Health Option. Like any bachelor’s degree year, a LOSI is worth 60 ECTS.
A LOSI consists of a “disciplinary major”—courses in the core bachelor’s degree field (law, economics, life and earth sciences, etc.)—and a “health minor,” composed of courses in the health field. The course units (UE) in the major account for 48 ECTS out of 60. The health minor consists of a single course unit called “Common Health Course Unit” worth 12 ECTS. The Common Health Course Unit (12 ECTS) is therefore an integral part of the curriculum for the LOSI track.
LOSC: LAS with a Complementary Health Option.
The core bachelor’s degree courses (law, economics, life and earth sciences, etc.) account for the full 60 ECTS credits of the bachelor’s degree year. The Common Health Course Unit is not included in the curriculum frameworks for the chosen track. The 60 ECTS credits are dedicated to the major-specific course units, to which 12 ECTS credits from the Common Health Course Unit are added.

The General Health Course Unit (UE Santé Commune) consists of three Course Unit Components (ECUE): General Human Physiology (PHG) for 5 ECTS, Humanities and Social Sciences (SHS) for 5 ECTS, and Medications and Other Health Products (MAPS) for 2 ECTS. To pass the Common Health Course Unit, students must achieve a passing grade in each of the three ECUE modules. Passing this course unit is a prerequisite for the admissibility of an MMOP application.
