  • OVERVIEW

The proposed track is an evolution of the “Statistics for the Life Sciences” and “Statistics for the Health Sciences” tracks from the “Mathematics” specialization in the previous academic period. The first year of the master’s program is now common to both tracks, and the Faculty offers two M2 sub-tracks: “Epidemiology, Health Data, and Biostatistics” and “Data Analyst for the Life Sciences.”

Its goal is to provide students—primarily those in health-related programs and bachelor’s degree programs in biology, mathematics, health sciences, and MIASHS—with dual expertise in epidemiology and biostatistics.

This dual skill set is particularly sought after in the job market. Our students will be true assets to any team, as they will have the necessary background in biology and health to fully understand the issues at hand and the skills to analyze data appropriately. This proper analysis of biology and health data is a major challenge for research in the coming years, as data sets are becoming increasingly large and numerous, and errors in their analysis can lead (and have already led in the past) to erroneous or non-reproducible conclusions that undermine the credibility of the entire research field. Genuine expertise in data analysis is therefore essential today to address complex epidemiological and biological questions.

In addition, we have updated the curriculum to enable health and biology students to acquire skills that are increasingly aligned with the job market in data analysis: we have introduced the Python programming language and expanded instruction in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Depending on their M2 track and the electives they choose, students will be able to develop skills in a specific area of interest:

    • specific biostatistical methods in the “Data Analyst for the Life Sciences” track,
    • Methods for evaluating and analyzing subjective data (Quality of Life and Qualitative Research) in Optional Block 1 of the “Epidemiology, Health Data, and Biostatistics” track,
    • quantitative imaging methods in Optional Block 2 of the “Epidemiology, Health Data, and Biostatistics” track.
  • Develop dual expertise in health sciences and biostatistics, with a focus on public health, epidemiology, and clinical research.
  • Oversee and monitor the setup, conduct, and progress of scientific experiments to obtain experimental data relevant to issues in biology or health.
  • Oversee statistical processing of data.
  • Analyze the results of statistical analyses and write reports and/or scientific articles on the results obtained and scientific advances.
