ORTHOPTICS

PARAMEDICAL STUDIES

  • Access Information

Admission to an orthoptics program requires a high school diploma. It is recommended that students take the following courses in high school: Mathematics, Physics, and Biology in 11th grade, and Physics and Biology in 12th grade, with Mathematics as an elective.

Prospective students must have applied for this program via the Parcoursup platform.
Admission to this program is subject to a review of the applicant’s qualifications based on the criteria specified on the platform, followed by an interview for those selected.

They must provide proof of a high school diploma, a DAEU, a French or foreign diploma that qualifies as an exemption from the high school diploma requirement, or a qualification or experience deemed sufficient in accordance with the provisions of Article L613-5 of the Education Code.

  • Duration of Studies

The orthoptics program lasts three years.

  • Contents

The program consists of six semesters of study. The program aims to:

    • the acquisition of the scientific and technical knowledge essential to mastering the skills and expertise required to practice the profession,
    • a fundamental approach to human beings, the pursuit of maintaining health, or patient care based on health knowledge,
    • the acquisition of knowledge in pathology and pathophysiology,
    • learning clinical reasoning and therapeutic intervention,
    • the acquisition of the general skills necessary for the orthoptist to communicate with the patient and their family and friends,
    • training in the scientific method.

The program includes theoretical, guided, methodological, applied, and practical coursework, the completion of internships, and an oral defense based on a final thesis.

  • Exams

Students must earn 60 ECTS credits at the end of each academic year. To this end, two exam sessions are scheduled per semester (a regular exam session and a make-up exam session).

Upon completing their studies, students become licensed orthoptists after earning their orthoptist certification.

  • Career Opportunities

After graduation, an orthoptist can work in private practice. They can also work as employees in hospitals, clinics, and healthcare centers.

He may also participate in therapeutic programs at specialized facilities.

IN BRIEF

Orthoptics involves the assessment, training, and rehabilitation of vision —sometimes using devices—to treat functional vision disorders.

Orthoptics addresses all impairments of functional vision related to motor, sensory, and functional aspects. An orthoptic examination serves as the foundation for assessing visual abilities based on the patient’s reported symptoms, medical condition, age, and specific needs related to their daily activities.

The program lasts three years and is open to students who have passed the admission exams.

TESTIMONIALS

OUR STUDENTS HAVE THE FLOOR

Faculty Life

In my view, opticians and orthoptists are two professions that complement each other perfectly

My name is Nicolas, I’m 25 years old, and I’m in my first year of orthoptics school.

The reason I’m where I am today is that I worked as an optician before deciding to change careers, although I see it more as a specialization.

In fact, I see optometry and orthoptics as two professions that complement each other perfectly, so I’m really looking forward to this new training program with the goal of working in private practice—since working as an employee in a retail setting just wasn’t the right fit for me.

Come see an orthoptist!

My name is Coralie, I’m 18, and I just graduated from high school! Orthoptics has always been something that’s interested me! During high school, I did a lot of internships to really gain confidence, and I recommend that everyone do the same to be sure of their path.

Even though it might be a little intimidating at first to just come straight out of high school when most of the class had already completed other studies, in the end everyone is supportive, and there’s a lot of mutual help, even across different grade levels!

It’s a profession that doesn’t get much attention, even though it’s very interesting and diverse.

Come see an orthoptist! 🙂

AMEO'S ACTIVITIES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

  • Student representation

AMEO is a student association founded in 2008. It represents students in the orthoptics program and works to raise awareness of this profession. To this end, we participate in various events such as student fairs, university open houses, and many others, providing information to the public about the profession itself, the academic program, and internships.

  • Integration assistance

AMEO ensures that students enjoy their studies and feel well integrated into the school. To this end, integration, festive, and team-building events are organized regularly, such as pancake sales, the end-of-year gala, and group orders for orthoptic supplies. Events are also held in collaboration with other organizations, such as “Hôpital des Nounours” and Sidaction.

  • Liaison with other organizations

Finally, AMEO acts as a liaison between all the associations it has joined, sharing information that is important and useful for studies and daily life in Montpellier. Thus, AMEO has joined the FFEO (French Federation of Orthoptics Students), the AGEM (General Association of Montpellier Students), and ADEMMOOS (Association of Student Representatives in Montpellier-Nîmes for Medicine, Speech Therapy, Orthoptics, and Midwifery). This association represents students within the Faculty of Medicine and works to improve educational conditions and keep students informed.

  • User-friendliness

In conclusion, to help you enjoy your studies with peace of mind, the AMEO executive board invites you to join us at our various events or at the Faculty of Medicine’s office!
