Maras Artist-in-Residence Blog Banner

Last September, slam poet and rapper Mathias Montoya—known by the stage name Maras (runner-up in the World Freestyle Rap Championship)—joined the artist-in-residence program called “Cordes invisibles” at the IUT in Nîmes and at the Nîmes campuses of the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Medicine.

The Artist-in-Residence Project

Throughout the year, the artist organized poetry tours, compliment battles, improv performances, concerts, and musical performances… He also led writing and public speaking workshops, beatboxing workshops, and masterclasses. The goal of his work was to give students who were interested the opportunity to practice songwriting as well as public speaking; this helped them improve their self-confidence, creativity, and eloquence. This exchange allowed the artist to create songs, lyrics, and performances inspired by his interactions with members of the university community.

With his work coming to an end last April, numerous events were organized to celebrate this adventure in style!

A farewell worth celebrating!

Three events marked the end of this collaboration:

  • A Compliment Battle
  • An open-mic poetry event
  • A concert featuring Alexhino and the JAM

With the support of the DRAC Occitanie and in partnership with Paloma, the contemporary music venue in Nîmes Métropole.
