Spring 2024: A Celebration of Rare Plants!

On Sunday, March 24, 2024, Boulevard Henri IV hosted the 19th edition of Primavera, the annual festival celebrating rare plants and the protection of biodiversity. This unique event took place in the distinctive setting of France’s oldest botanical garden.

Nursery owners, environmental organizations, publishers of specialized books, visual artists, agricultural schools, and speakers gathered at the Jardin des Plantes to take part in this grand celebration. With 46 nursery owners from across the south of France—including 10 new vendors set up in front of the Orangerie—as well as 13 environmental organizations, 3 specialized publishers, and 3 illustrators, visitors were greeted by a diverse array of fascinating exhibitors.

Despite the windy weather, nearly 7,000 visitors gathered to explore the many booths and activities on offer at this year’s Primavera.

What began as a simple plant fair has evolved into a must-attend event for botany enthusiasts and environmentalists.

This year, visitors were spoiled for choice among the exhibitors, and in addition to nursery owners and associations, two themed exhibitions drew particular attention. The first, titled “Climate and Biodiversity: It’s Hot!”, offered a better understanding of the impacts of climate change on biodiversity through an educational and interactive approach. The second exhibition, “The Botanical Gardens of Padua and Montpellier,” offered a deep dive into the history and connections between these two iconic botanical institutions.

Finally, the lectures organized by the Institute of Botany were packed to capacity. From a behind-the-scenes tour of the Jardin des Plantes to an exploration of the challenges posed by climate change, and including the fascinating history of botany and medicine in Montpellier, the speakers shared their expertise and passion with the audience.

We look forward to seeing you next year when spring arrives for the 20th edition.
