Agnès McLaren: A Pioneer in Medicine Who Trained in Montpellier

Agnès McLaren, the first woman to graduate from the Montpellier School of Medicine in 1878, made history through her courage and determination. A native of Scotland, she fought to ensure that women could pursue medical studies at a time when this was still forbidden to them in most European countries.

A doctor and activist, she went on to devote her life to caring for the most disadvantaged women, particularly in India, where she opened a hospital so that they could be treated by female doctors.

His career exemplifies the values of humanism and openness that our faculty upholds.
