Agnès McLaren: a medical pioneer trained in Montpellier

Agnès McLaren, the first woman to graduate from the Montpellier School of Medicine in 1878, made history through her courage and determination. Originally from Scotland, she fought to ensure that women could pursue medical studies at a time when this was still forbidden to them in most European countries.

A doctor and activist, she went on to devote her life to caring for the most disadvantaged women, particularly in India, where she opened a hospital to ensure they could be treated by female doctors.

His career exemplifies the values of humanism and openness that our faculty upholds.

Discover her story in this special feature, featuring the Dean, Professor Thierry Lavabre Bertrand, and Caroline Debladis, president of the Agnès McLaren Association:“Agnès McLaren: For the Good of Others”
