Agnès McLaren: a Montpellier-trained medical pioneer

The first woman to graduate from Montpellier's Faculty of Medicine in 1878, Agnès McLaren made history with her courage and determination. Originally from Scotland, she fought for women's access to medical studies, at a time when this was still forbidden in most European countries.

A doctor and activist, she then devoted her life to caring for the most disadvantaged women, notably in India, where she opened a hospital to enable them to be cared for by women doctors.

His career illustrates the values of humanism and openness espoused by our faculty.

Find out more about her story in the report dedicated to her, with contributions from Madame la Doyenne, Pr Thierry Lavabre Bertrand and Caroline Debladis, President of the Agnès McLaren Association: " Agnès McLaren, pour le bien des autres " (" Agnès McLaren, for the good of others ").
