"Let's Talk Novembrose" Workshop – Breaking the Silence on Mental Health Among First-Year Health Science Students

For several years now, the Montpellier Health Tutoring Association has been committed to supporting first-year health students, both in their studies and in their daily lives as students, particularly through initiatives focused on prevention and promoting well-being.
It is in this spirit that we decided to launch a project aimed at encouraging open dialogue and breaking down the taboos surrounding mental health: the “Let’s Talk Novembrose” workshop.

Designed for students in the PASS and LAS programs, this workshop addresses a topic often overlooked in health studies: mental health. Indeed, November marks a turning point in the academic year: after the energy of the first few weeks, the workload intensifies, fatigue sets in, and motivation wanes. This phenomenon, well known to students, is called “Novembrose.” It refers to this period when morale drops, days seem longer, and loneliness becomes more burdensome.

The workshop was therefore designed as a response to these difficult times. In small groups, students are invited to talk openly in a welcoming, non-judgmental setting. Guided by mental health professionals, they can share their feelings, discuss their experiences, and find some comfort through conversations with attentive facilitators. The goal is not to provide ready-made solutions, but to allow everyone to see themselves reflected in the experiences of others and to leave with a sense of peace.

Each participant is given a plant—a symbol of growth and continuity—to remind them that even in times of doubt, it is possible to rebuild themselves and move forward at their own pace. This simple yet meaningful gesture embodies the spirit of the workshop: taking care of oneself, slowly but surely.

Through this initiative, the Montpellier Health Tutoring Association aims to remind everyone that success depends not only on hard work or grades, but also on the ability to maintain a healthy balance. More broadly, this project underscores a fundamental belief: before they are health students, they are first and foremost people, and their mental health deserves our full attention.

The workshop will be held on Thursday, November 6, at the Arnaud de Villeneuve campus. You can choose from two time slots:

  • From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., in the Curie lecture hall;
  • From 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Room 309.
