A look back at the DFGSM2 orientation day, followed by the 2025 stethoscope ceremony

On Tuesday, September 9, 2025, the faculty will welcome these second-year medical students from Montpellier and Nîmes.

The day consisted of three highlights:

  • A welcome for the people of Nîmes at the historic building, featuring a guided tour led by professors in academic robes,

Professors Gérald Chanques, Valérie Rigau, Michel Voisin, and Olivier Joncquet, along with Drs. Vincent Boudousq and Christophe Bonnel, led tours of the ceremonial halls, the former dissection room, and the Orfila Rouvière Museum.

Meanwhile, the people of Montpellier were at the theater at UPM 🙂

  • Picnic with a guided tour of the botanical garden,

Professors Thierry Lavabre Bertrand and John de Vos, along with Emmanuel Spic and several gardeners, joined them to show them around the garden.

  • Play and discussion on the VSS, organized by Professor Carine Becamel

In the early afternoon, the Acthéâtre troupe—featuring actors Alain Lagneau, Isabel Jeannin, Claire Couture, and Edouard Eftimakis—performed the play “VSS: Chronicle of Everyday Violence.” Following the performance, Dr. Laurent Martrille (forensic pathologist), Dr. Olivier Mathieu (toxicologist), Céline Bais (psychiatrist at CRIAVS), Magali Teillard (psychologist at CRIAVS), Adjutant Léa Miheau, and Adjutant Philippe Martens, both from the Family Protection Center, addressed the students.

  • ceremony to present stethoscopes donated by the departmental medical associations,

In the late afternoon, all the departmental heads, the Director of the ARS, Dean Isabelle Laffont, the professors who led the day’s activities, the Director of the Jardin, Prof. John De Vos, several associate deans of the faculty, the presidents of the student associations in Montpellier and Nîmes (which also contributed to the day’s success), the presidents of the music associations JAM and Medley, and the last three student vice deans, took the stage to congratulate the new graduating class.

The group, consisting of 196 PASS students, 172 LAS students, and 17 bridge students, was called up one by one to receive their stethoscopes from the faculty members and take a group photo.

  • Garden party featuring the faculty's music groups, JAM and Medley

This event gave the Nîmes class the opportunity to spend the entire day at the Faculty of Medicine’s Historic Building and Botanical Garden, where they explored their faculty’s heritage, and allowed all second-year students to learn about the student unions.

Teachers, administrative staff, and students all enjoyed the evening together in a friendly atmosphere, with musical entertainment provided by the student groups Medley and La JAM.
