The University of Montpellier steps up prevention of hazing and sexist and sexual violence

The start of the academic year is a time for socializing and meeting new people, but it can also be the occasion for reprehensible acts such as hazing or sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), often observed at student parties or integration weekends. In order to preserve the "convivial and festive character" of these events, the University of Montpellier is deploying a range of preventive actions and firmly reiterating the legal framework.

Hazing is a crime

Hazing consists in subjecting a person to humiliating or degrading acts. Even if the person consents, it is an offence. These practices are forbidden by article 52 of the internal regulations and punishable by law by 6 months' imprisonment and a €7,500 fine.
Getting someone to drink alcohol excessively, for example, is a case of hazing. Every year, these practices lead to hospitalizations and student resignations, with lasting consequences.

The university has implemented several concrete actions:

  • The presence of the preventive medicine department, student life and quality of life at work services at welcome stands, to raise awareness among new students.

  • VSS prevention video-chats on October 7 and 8, supplemented by online awareness modules available on Moodle

  • The provision of practical documents: charter for festive events, practical information sheets and support guide for victims or witnesses of SGBV

  • A targeted communication campaign via posters, social networks and dynamic screens

Student associations, which organize many events, are at the heart of the scheme. They are made aware of these issues as part of the training provided by the Bureau de la Vie Étudiante (Student Life Office), and are required to fill in a description form before organizing any event. As the university reminds us, they remain "solely responsible for implementing safety instructions".

Each association has a student welfare officer and a Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) coordinator.

The University of Montpellier reaffirms its total lack of tolerance towards hazing and sexist and sexual violence. Any violation of human dignity will be subject to criminal and disciplinary proceedings. The university is therefore calling for "the utmost vigilance and firmness" to ensure that the start of the new academic year remains both cheerful and serene.

We wish you all the best for the new school year!
