The University of Montpellier is stepping up efforts to prevent hazing and gender-based and sexual violence

The start of the academic year is a time of camaraderie and new connections, but it can also be an opportunity for reprehensible acts such as hazing or gender-based and sexual violence (GBV), which are often observed at student parties or orientation weekends. To preserve the “friendly and festive atmosphere” of these events, the University of Montpellier is implementing a series of preventive measures and firmly reiterating the legal framework.

Hazing is a crime

Hazing involves forcing a person to undergo or commit humiliating or degrading acts. Even if the person consents, it is still a crime. These practices are prohibited by Article 52 of the student handbook and punishable by law with up to six months in prison and a fine of €7,500.
Forcing someone to consume excessive amounts of alcohol, for example, constitutes hazing. Every year, these practices result in hospitalizations, student withdrawals, and leave lasting consequences.

The university is implementing several concrete measures:

  • The presence of the Preventive Medicine Department, Student Life Services, and Workplace Quality Services at the welcome booths, to raise awareness among new students

  • Video chats on the prevention of sexual and sexual violence on October 7 and 8, supplemented by online awareness-raising modules available on Moodle

  • Providing practical resources: guidelines for festive events, fact sheets, and a support guide for victims or witnesses of sexual violence

  • A targeted communication campaign using posters, social media, and digital displays

Student organizations, which organize numerous events, are at the heart of the system. They are made aware of these issues through training provided by the Office of Student Life and are required to complete a form detailing the event before organizing it. As the university emphasizes, they remain “solely responsible for implementing safety guidelines.”

Each student organization has a student well-being coordinator and a point person for sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).

The University of Montpellier reaffirms its zero-tolerance policy toward hazing and gender-based and sexual violence. Any violation of human dignity will be subject to criminal and disciplinary proceedings. The university is therefore calling for “the utmost vigilance and firmness” to ensure that the start of the academic year remains a joyful and peaceful occasion.

We wish you all a great start to the school year and hope you’re in good spirits!
