A Look Back at the 5th Edition of the SPES Training Program – Primary Care, Environment, and Health

On September 25, 2025, the Montpellier Faculty of Medicine hosted the 5th edition of the SPES ( Primary Care, Environment, and Health) training program in its Historic Building. Under this year’s theme , “My Life, My Community,” the event brought together faculty members, healthcare professionals, partner institutions, and organizations to collectively reflect on the intersecting challenges of health, the environment, and healthcare delivery.

A morning filled with scientific and institutional presentations

After a warm welcome over coffee, the opening plenary session was led by Prof. Béatrice Lognos and Prof. François Carbonnel, both from PUMG, followed by a presentation of the program by Dr. Jean-Baptiste Tostain of CCUMG.

The morning continued with several presentations:

  • Dr. Pierre Souvet, lecturer, on environmental health issues,
  • Dr. Jean-Baptiste Bonnet, PHU, on endocrine disruptors and PFAS,
  • Prof. Philippe Serayet, PAMG, and Dr. Véronique Mondain, PH , on the topic of antibiotic resistance and the One Health approach,
  • Ms. Élodie Plancque of the ARS (Regional Health Agency) to conduct a regional assessment as part of the PRSE3.

These conferences helped spark a discussion on the close links between the environment, land-use planning, and public health, through complementary and multidisciplinary approaches.

The mid-morning break gave way to a forum bringing together several key players in the health and environment ecosystem: FECOP, MedVallée, URPS, ASEF, and Human Santé. This forum for discussion facilitated interactions between speakers, healthcare professionals, and students, helping to highlight local initiatives and strengthen collaborations.

In the early afternoon, several institutional leaders took the floor:

  • Prof. Isabelle Laffont, Dean of the Montpellier-Nîmes School of Medicine,
  • Ms. Betty Zumbo of the ARS, Deputy Director of Public Health in charge of Prevention Policy and Head of the Health and Environment Division,
  • and Professor François Carbonnel, PUMG.

Their remarks underscored the importance of a community-based approach in public health policies and the need to implement concrete and sustainable measures to address environmental challenges.

The day concluded with a seriesof workshops, offering participants the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and compare their approaches using real-world examples.

The Montpellier-Nîmes School of Medicine extends its warmest thanks to all the speakers, partners, and participants for their dedication and the fruitful discussions that marked this 5th edition.
