Faculty intern on top of the world: Cécile Garcia Cabrol climbs Manaslu for the Gift of Life

After a four-week expedition in Nepal, Cécile Garcia Cabrol, an anesthesia-intensive care resident at the Faculté de Médecine Montpellier-Nîmes, has reached the summit of Manaslu, 8,163 meters above sea level. It is the eighth highest peak in the world.

Beyond the sporting performance, this ascent carried a strong message: to raise awareness of bone marrow donation. As an ambassador for the 1KmPourLaVie association, Cécile has been committed for several years to raising awareness of organ and bone marrow donation through sporting and solidarity projects. In early 2024, she climbed the Aconcagua in the Andes for the same association.

Did you know that a bone marrow donation is a blood cell collection (like plasma donations), and that a saliva sample allows anyone under 36 to enter the list of potential donors? It's far less impressive than the name suggests.

The expedition, carried out in September during a period of heightened awareness of pediatric cancers, was part of a wider campaign organized by 1KmPourLaVie and the Montpellier University Hospital, relaying testimonials from doctors, patients and donors.

On site, Cécile also contributed to a solidarity initiative by distributing school supplies to several Nepalese schools, in partnership with Bikram Népal Solidarité and thanks to the support ofAltrad Solidarity.

Her professional career is directly linked to this commitment. As an intern in anaesthesia-intensive care, she provides day-to-day support to patients with terminal organ failure, often awaiting transplants, and their families. She also led a research project in Sweden on hematopoietic stem cells (bone marrow).

Congratulations to Cécile on this remarkable achievement, which combines scientific rigor, self-improvement and human commitment.
