The Orangerie at the Jardin des Plantes is hosting an exhibition by artist Ursula Caruel, organized at the suggestion of the Association of Friends of the Jardin des Plantes in Montpellier.

Ursula Caruel’s art installation, designed specifically for the Orangerie, is part of the centuries-old history of France’s oldest botanical garden. Spanning 27 meters, it celebrates plants as both a raw material and a source of spiritual inspiration, and as a symbol of life and resilience.

At the heart of the installation*Les longs fils clairs de la lumière*(TheLong, BrightThreads ofLight), a series of suspended paper circles evokes a herbarium in a poetic form. The circle, a universal shape with no beginning and no end, embodies the cycle of the seasons, the repetition of life, and inclusivity: there is a place for everyone within it. This approach naturally resonates with the University of Montpellier’s herbarium, one of the most extensive in Europe.

This work is a tribute to time and its invisible cycles. Each season renews the garden, transforming its shapes, colors, and textures. The installation also evolves as the days go by, welcoming light and the viewer’s gaze. It invites slow contemplation, an intimate dialogue with the plants, in the hushed silence of the Orangerie. Art, here, is a suspended herbarium, a breath at leaf level, a shared breath.
