Early Health and Science Track

Currently offered at only three medical schools in France, the Montpellier-Nîmes School of Medicine offers a program that combines medical and scientific knowledge as part of the Rabelais Health Cluster. This program, also known as the “Rabelais Health-Science Dual Degree Program,” is described as “early-entry” because it begins in the second year of health studies (medicine, dentistry, or pharmacy). Unlike the so-called “traditional” dual degree program, the “early-entry” dual degree program includes a gap year from the health studies program to complete the M2 year in the sciences.

  • Educational Requirement : Two years of post-secondary education
  • Program duration: 3 years (M1+M2) to 6 years (if continuing on to a Ph.D.)
  • Internships: Yes

EARLY DUAL TRACK PROGRAM

HEALTH AND SCIENCE AT RABELAIS

  • OVERVIEW

The early dual degree program in health and science is designed for students who show an early interest in scientific research. Indeed, thanks to the introduction of dual degree programs as early as the second year of health studies (Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy), students can begin scientific research very quickly (as early as the fourth year after high school graduation), even before choosing their health specialty.

The early dual-track program is therefore organized as follows:

    • Completion of the two-year scientific M1 program, concurrently with the second and third years of the health sciences program (MOP)
    • Completion of the one-year scientific M2 degree through a gap year in health studies (after completing the bachelor’s degree)

Completion of the M2 opens the door to scientific research for students, offering them the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree: either directly after their master’s program (continuing their gap year) or after resuming their health sciences program and completing their master’s degree.

The Rabelais Dual-Track Program aims to:

  • To provide the cultural and scientific knowledge necessary for access to scientific research
  • To enable students interested in research to gain experience through internships

And all of this is done alongside health studies, allowing students to develop a multidisciplinary background in health and science.

Upon completion of the dual degree program, students earn a Master 2 degree in science in addition to their health-related degree. They also have the option to continue their research training by pursuing a university dissertation.

There are several early dual-track health and science degree programs in France. All of them involve an initial selection process based on the applicant’s application materials during the first quarter of the second year of health studies. The application includes academic transcripts, a statement of purpose, a resume, and an analysis of a scientific article of the applicant’s choice. This allows the selection committee to assess whether the applicant demonstrates anearly interest in the scientific methodor a deep aptitude for a wide variety of scientific fields.

At thenational level, there are two main schools that offer these dual-track programs:

These programs are highly selective, with between thirty and forty students accepted each year from across France (Inserm and ENS Paris and Lyon).

Another way to enroll in these dual-degree programs is throughregional dual-degree programs.

To boost the motivation of students who might be discouraged by an additional national entrance exam, regional dual-track programs have been developed by the universities of Paris Descartes/Diderot, Paris Pierre and Marie Curie, Strasbourg, Nantes, Bordeaux, Rennes, Rouen, and Caen. Based on the same principle but with a selection process that is strictly local, these regional dual degree programs have the advantage of offering dual training to a larger number of students without requiring them to go through a rigorous national selection process.

Our faculty has established this regional dual degree program, which offers training grounded in translational health research. This early-stage dual degree program was initially funded by the “EpiGenMed” Labex, and since 2020, its funding has been renewed through the I-Site MUSE. The long-term goal of this new early-track program is to expand it to a greater number of master’s programs to cover all health-related fields, and to enable a small number of students (between 5 and 10) who are motivated by a career in health research to begin an early-track dual degree in medicine and science locally each year.

Academic Planning for Students Enrolling in an Early Dual-Degree Program

The Medicine and Sciences Track allows students to pursue a Master's in Health Biology while studying medicine.

The Master’s 1 program is spread over two years, running concurrently with the second and third years of medical school. Upon completion of the Master’s 1 program and a full year of Master’s 2, students choose to continue their medical studies or proceed directly to their scientific thesis in a research laboratory.

To find out which master’s programs and course units are eligible for this track, please visit the website dedicated to the Rabelais dual-degree program, where you’ll find additional details.
