24 Hours of Biodiversity

On Saturday, April 13, the Jardin des Plantes in Montpellier hosted the 24 Hours of Biodiversity. Organized by GNAUM (the University of Montpellier Naturalist Group), this event—now in its 9th year— highlighted plant biodiversity through workshops organized by the Jardin des Plantes and its partner, Tela Botanica*.

The goal of the 24 Hours of Biodiversity is toraise public awareness of the richness of biodiversity by conducting a biodiversity survey of a site over the course of 24 hours. It is an opportunity for nature enthusiasts from all walks of life to come together, form teams, and share their knowledge in a friendly atmosphere.

This year, the event attracted more than 2,700 visitors. It consisted of three main parts: a community village focused on biodiversity, exhibits showcasing the association’s activities and projects, and taxonomic surveys conducted in the Jardin des Plantes throughout the day, which concluded at nightfall with the nocturnal ballet of the bats.

Beyond its educational value, the 24 Hours of Biodiversity also provided an opportunity for nature enthusiasts to meet and exchange ideas. In a relaxed atmosphere, participants were able to share their enthusiasm and interest in environmental conservation.
