THE PASS

PATHWAY TO HEALTH STUDIES

  • Place of study

Atthe University of Montpellier, students can enroll in the PASS program and thus take all the courses for this year of study at the Faculty of Medicine (Arnaud de Villeneuve Health Campus in Montpellier or the Health Campus in Nîmes) and at the Faculty of Pharmacy (Flahault Campus in Montpellier).

The curriculum is exactly the same across all campuses. Classes are held in person or via live or recorded broadcasts.

  • Duration of Studies

The PASS program runs for one year.

It is not possible to repeat the PASS program. At the end of the PASS year, there are three possible scenarios:

    1. The student has completed the PASS program and been admitted: they are moving on to the second year of the MMOPKI program
    2. The student has successfully completed the PASS year (60 ECTS) in the first exam session but has not been admitted to the MMOPKI program; or has successfully completed the PASS year in the second exam session: the student proceeds to LAS 2, corresponding to the track selected on Parcoursup
    3. The student has not successfully completed their PASS year: they must switch to the L1 program via Parcoursup

Students who complete the LAS program after completing the PASS program will have only one new opportunity to apply for theMMOPKI admission exams.

  • Exams and Admission to the Preparatory Year

There are two exam periods during the PASS year: the first takes place in early January and covers Semester 1, while the second takes place in April–May and covers Semester 2.

Admission to the MMOP program is contingent upon successful completion of the PASS year (earning 60 ECTS credits, starting with the first exam session). This completion is determined by averaging the grades from all course units. However, to be eligible for the admission phase, students must also have individually passed course units in the health sciences field totaling 12 ECTS credits.

Once these prerequisites have been met, the student moves on to theadmission phase, which consists of two sets of exams:

    • An initial round based on the results of the PASS year, which grants direct admission to MMOP to applicants who meet or exceed a threshold set by the admissions committee. This initial round accounts for 0 to 50% of the available spots in each program.
    • and a second, oral exam (for MMOP students only) for students who were not admitted directly but who achieved a sufficient score on the first exam. This second exam accounts for 50 to 100 percent of the spots in each program.
  • Career Opportunities

Students who successfully complete their PASS program may, depending on their preferences and grades, enter the second year of health studies at the University of Montpellier in:

    • Medicine (School of Medicine)
    • Maieutics (School of Medicine)
    • Dentistry (School of Dentistry)
    • Pharmacy (School of Pharmacy)
    • Physical Therapy (Montpellier Institute of Massage and Physical Therapy)
    • Nursing Sciences (Nursing Education Institute)

If not admitted, students may continue on to LAS 2 (provided they have successfully completed the PASS year) in the bachelor’s program corresponding to the track they selected in Parcoursup. ( See the 2022–23 LAS 2 table)

IN BRIEF

With the elimination of PACES, the PASSthe “Health Sciences” track—has become one of the two main pathways to health sciences programs.

In Montpellier, the PASS allows students to apply to the following health-related programs: Medicine, Midwifery, Dentistry, Pharmacy (MMOP), Physical Therapy (K), and Nursing (I: courses for which are taught at the IFSI—Institute for Nursing Education).

The PASS year consists of a two-part program: a health major(so called because it accounts for the majority of the year’s ECTS credits: 49 out of a total of 60), comprising several course units (CUs) all in the health field (chemistry-biochemistry, physiology, cellular and molecular biology, physics, pharmacology, etc.), 1 ECTS for the English course unit; as well as a mandatory disciplinary minor, worth 10 ECTS, comprising course units outside the health field. This disciplinary minor corresponds to the options/sub-choices to be selected in Parcoursup from among all options offered at the University of Montpellier. This minor allows students, in the event they are not admitted to MMOPKI but after successfully completing the PASS year, to continue their studies toward a LAS 2 and to have the opportunity to apply a second time for admission to health studies.

Faculty Life

Hello to you, high school student reading this!

If I had to sum up my experience with medical school so far (I’m in my third year), I’d say, “It’s worth every bit of effort.” I’m starting with this quote because, like anyone thinking about their career path, you’re probably wondering about the difficulty of the program, its length, and the sacrifices it requires. I’ll be honest: medical school demands a lot, especially in the first year (PACES in my day, PASS/LAS for you now).

But the important thing to remember is that success is possible. It sounds silly when you put it that way, but after hearing all sorts of things about the first year, you have to get back to basics: it’s a grueling year, but I experienced it like a chrysalis—you emerge transformed, and often “more beautiful” than when you started (if we ignore the weight gain or loss, haha). Beyond that first year—which is just the first step on the staircase—a world you can’t fully imagine awaits you: I’ve made my best friends, had unforgettable experiences, both during the medical student traditions and during my hospital rotations. So yes, compared to the first year, P2 is “easy”: but don’t rest on your laurels—even if it’s the year of liberation, you’re still there to gain knowledge for your future profession!

In conclusion, if you’re considering a career in medicine, make sure you do your research to understand what lies ahead, and equip yourself with the tools you need to achieve your goals—you won’t regret the sacrifices you make!

The capacity of the PASS program in Montpellier-Nîmes is 1,890 spots, including90 spots for students eligible for financial aid.

Once you have received your admission approval (through Parcoursup), you can enroll after your high school graduation exam results are released in July.

All procedures and information will be available on this website under the "Registration" tab, which will appear in the menu at the top right.

The purpose of these courses is to facilitate a change of track: students who have successfully completed their PASS year (earning 60 ECTS credits) may, if they are not admitted to the MMOP+KI program, enter the second year of the LAS (another pathway leading to the MMOP) corresponding to the disciplinary minor course unit aligned with the options/sub-choices selected in Parcoursup, from among all the options offered at the University of Montpellier

Here are the criteria evaluated according to Parcoursup:

General criteria for evaluating course preferences

Academic Results

Excellent scientific knowledge and skills – Essential
Candidates in their final year of the general track: a weighting factor + 9 points based on the averages in the EDS courses in Mathematics, Physics-Chemistry, and Life and Earth Sciences > 10/20; 2 EDS courses are taken into account. Candidates in their final year of the S track: a weighting + 6 points on the averages for Physics-Chemistry and Life and Earth Sciences > 10. Candidates with other baccalaureate degrees: averages in Mathematics, Physics-Chemistry, Life and Earth Sciences (or equivalent). Calculation of the average of these grades after any applicable weighting.

Academic skills, methodological knowledge, practical skills: Essential
Grades from the preliminary French baccalaureate exams. Calculation of the average of the written and oral scores, if available.

Ability to learn and to handle a very heavy workload. Strong commitment – Essential
Performance in the final year of high school in biology and physics/chemistry is a key factor. However, performance in the humanities and social sciences (humanities, literature and philosophy, economics and social sciences, etc.) and in mathematics, as well as results on the French section of the baccalaureate exam, will also be taken into account. Overall performance in the first semesters in core subjects and on continuous assessments is also an important factor in evaluating overall academic standing.

For students not receiving scholarships: tuition of €170 + €95 for the CVEC (student and campus life contribution),

Students receiving scholarships do not have to pay any fees upfront, provided they have received notification from the CROUS and have therefore submitted their student financial aid application to the CROUS on time.
