On Monday, August 17, 2020, the Faculty officially celebrated its 800th anniversary! A look back at an event marked by sharing and conviviality.

800 years of history, tradition, and excellence

The ceremony begins at the top of the steps of the Cour d'Honneur. Teachers and students, dressed in their finest ceremonial attire, make their entrance into this historic venue alongside:

  • from the President of the University of Montpellier, Philippe Augé;
  • from the Dean of the Faculty, Michel Mondain;
  • from the Chairman of the Steering Committee, Thierry Lavabre-Bertrand.

We were, of course, able to count on the presence and participation of representatives from local and regional authorities:

  •  Mr. Christian Assaf for the Occitanie Region,
  • Mr. Renaud Calvat for the Department of Hérault,
  • Mr. Michaël Delafosse for the Metropolis and the City of Montpellier
  • and finally Ms. Sophie Béjean, Rector of the Montpellier Academy and the Occitanie Region.

To begin the ceremony on the right foot, Professor Chanques and Usher Eddy Lamou presented our ceremonial mace, a symbolic object of the Faculty, to the audience. Representing the rod of Asclepius, this mace symbolizes the threat that awaits doctors who do not respect the Hippocratic oath.

Next, it was the turn of Professor Valérie Rigau, the youngest member of the management board, and Allan Guilley, a medical student and president of ACHEMM (the student association dedicated to the 800th anniversary of the Faculty), to read a translation of the Faculty's original statutes, thus recalling their historical and symbolic value.

These statutes were enacted on August 12, 1220, by the legate of Pope Honorius III, Cardinal Conrad of Urach. Since then, medical education has never ceased to exist in Montpellier, creating strong ties with the city, as President Augé and Dean Mondain recalled in their speeches.

A faculty proud of its past, looking toward the future

800 years later, the Faculty and its community are proud to celebrate this new milestone. To mark the occasion, a commemorative plaque was unveiled. It is a way of honoring the illustrious figures who have shaped our faculty, while continuing to write our history.

As current events show us, this will undoubtedly be a story full of challenges to overcome! Challenges that will in no way change the Faculty's mission: we will be there to support and train the healthcare professionals of tomorrow.

In this anniversary year, the Post Office is issuing a stamp dedicated to the 800th anniversary of our Faculty on June 13! More information in the article below.

Did you know? The post office is issuing a stamp to celebrate our 800th anniversary!

Starting June 13, the Post Office will issue a special stamp to celebrate our anniversary.

The stamp brings together our famous and symbolic Historic Building and our new Arnaud de Villeneuve Campus on the same surface, even though the two buildings are separated by 650 years! It thus illustrates the perfect paradox that characterizes our Faculty and its history: it is both the oldest in the world and undoubtedly one of the most modern in France.

As if by chance, Barthez and Lapeyronie were chosen to appear on this stamp, perfectly mirroring their statues, which still stand guard at the gates of our institution.

Four visible elements highlight the entire Faculty and its 800 years of history!

Where and when can I get it?

With a face value of €1.16, the stamp will be available for preview on Saturday, June 13 in Montpellier and Paris:

  • Montpellier : Post Office, Montpellier Prefecture, Place des Martyrs de la Résistance, 34000 Montpellier (subject to change).
  • Paris : Le Carré d’Encre, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Le Carré d’Encre, 13bis rue des Mathurins, 75009 Paris (entrance at 42 rue Godot de Mauroy, closed on Mondays).

In addition, due to the exceptional circumstances, the deadline for first day cancellations has been extended for issues dated March 1, 2020, from 8 weeks to 6 months.

Finally, from June 15, the stamp will be available:

Literary evening celebrating 800 years of the Faculty of Medicine

The long history of the Montpellier-Nîmes Faculty of Medicine is a source of inspiration. To mark its eighth centenary, we invite you to join us on Thursday, February 27, starting at 5p.m. , for a literary evening.

One location, two events

This literary evening will be held in the Glafira Ziegelmann amphitheater, which will be inaugurated for the occasion. This venue was not chosen at random: the story of this woman, the first female intern in Montpellier and eligible for the agrégation in medicine, is one of the events that have marked the Faculty of Medicine. Members of her family will also be present for the occasion, a poetic way of linking past and future history.

Presentations, discussions, and book signings

The evening will then continue, hosted by Dr. Etienne Cuenant, with the presentation of six books related to the history of the Faculty of Medicine. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions to the seven authors who will be present and then take part in a book signing session.

Professor François Bonnel

The first book, written by Professor François Bonnel, "Le musée d’Anatomie de Montpellier : un patrimoine historique" ( The Montpellier Anatomy Museum: a historical heritage), published by Éditions Sauramps Médical, will be available in April 2020 at a price of €59. In this work, Professor Bonnel presents and describes the 4,500 anatomical specimens preserved at the Museum of Anatomy from 1794 to 1930. The experience does not end there, as a virtual tour is also included.

Professor Jean-Pierre Dedet

Professor Jean-Pierre Dedet will present his book "Teaching Medicine in Montpellier: a 900-year-long story. The Oldest School of Medicine in the Western World," also published by Éditions Sauramps Médical, available in English in February 2020 and in French in May 2020, priced at €35. Hereyouwill find the history of the Faculty of Medicine since its creation, which has continued to operate throughout the centuries, even during the darkest hours of history.

Jean-Luc Fabre

Jean-Luc Fabre will present two of his novels, "La prophétie de Guilhem de Montpellier" ( The Prophecy of Guilhem of Montpellier), available in May 2020, and "La Vénititenne des pénitents blancs" (The Venetian Woman of the White Penitents), published in November 2017 by Éditions Privat, priced at €20 each. The first book is a fictionalized account of the history of the city's creation and the arrival of the first doctors and money changers. The second story brings to life the great names of the Faculty of Medicine and the Academy of Sciences and Letters of Montpellier in the early 18th century.

Caroline Fabre-Rousseau

Written by Caroline Fabre-Rousseau, Elles venaient d’Orembourg (They came from Orembourg), published by Éditions Chèvre-feuille étoilée and available in February 2020 for €17, presents the biographies of two Russian women who came to study medicine in Montpellier at the end of the 19th century: Glafira Zigelmann and Raïssa Lesk Kessek.

Finally, written jointly by Professors Jean-Louis Lamarque, Jean-Paul Sénac, and Dr. Elysé Lopez, "Un siècle de Radiologie à Montpellier" (A Century of Radiology in Montpellier), published by Éditions Mimosa Montpellier, will be available in February 2020 for €35. It traces the history of electro-radiology and medical imaging in Montpellier from its origins in 1896 to the 2000s. In this book, youwill find both the grand history as told by those who made it, richly illustrated, and the smaller stories as told by those who lived it, in images and anecdotes.

There will be something for everyone, allowing everyone to immerse themselves in the history of their city and their faculty in a different way!

In 2020, the Faculty of Medicine celebrates its 800th anniversary. To kick off the celebrations, discover the most precious works in the historical medical library during a special exhibition entitled: "Books and Men: The Birth of the Montpellier School of Medicine Library." See many collectible works in the Tekné Makré rooms of the Historic Building from September 21 to November 9.

A long humanist tradition

From Henri Haguenot to collector Xavier Atger, via Chaptal, Prunelle, and Barthez, the richness of Montpellier's medical library is also that of the great humanists who built it up from the second half of the 18th century onwards. Whether through personal donations, bequests, purchases, or revolutionary confiscations, this encyclopedic collection reflects a strong desire to make "the best works written on each subject" (Prunelle) available to doctors, students, and the general public.

An exceptional heritage fund

Medieval and modern manuscripts, incunabula, books, journals, theses... This exhibition is an opportunity to discover the rare and diverse items contained in these collections: the Montpellier Songbook, Charlemagne's Psalter, Arnaud de Villeneuve's Treatise on Wine, works by Hippocrates and Galen, and Redouté's Liliacées... These are just some of the treasures that visitors will be able to discover. An essential reminder of a humanistic and encyclopedic vision of knowledge, of which these works are still magnificent examples today.
