The Teddy Bear Hospital is back in 2022! To find out everything you need to know about this useful and endearing awareness campaign, read this article!

LHealth students in Montpellier join forces for a meaningful initiative

As every year since 2002, our students in the fields of medicine, midwifery, and speech therapy (via the ACM student associations) ACM, AMESF and Dislalie) are joining forces with students from pharmacy, dentistry, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy programs to organize an event that is as unique in its gentleness as it is in its usefulness: the Teddy Bear Hospital.

The concept? Healthcare students welcome preschoolers from disadvantaged neighborhoods to introduce them to the hospital environment and health checkups through a fun activity: their stuffed animals become patients for a day!

A mini interdisciplinary course on caring for stuffed animals

The event, which will take place this year from March 28 to April 1, will feature a mini healthcare center for children's stuffed animals, spread across 12 kindergarten classes. A real "mini-hospital"!

The program includes no fewer than 15 multidisciplinary healthcare stands! To prepare for mediation with children, the students running the stands received special training from a child psychiatrist at Montpellier University Hospital.

Stands run by medical students (ACM)

  • Pulmonology – Cardiology
  • Radiology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Dermatology
  • Gastroenterology
  • General medicine
  • Anesthesia-Surgery
  • Emergencies
  • Nutrition – Sports Medicine – Environmental Medicine

Stand run by midwifery students (AMESF)

  • Vaccination booth

Stand run by speech therapy students (DISLALIE)

  • Sign language booth, hearing and attention training

Stands run by students from other health programs:

  • Pharmacy: medications and lice
  • Dental: dental care
  • Occupational therapy: disability awareness
  • Physical therapy: balance training

Objective: to take the drama out of the hospital environment and educate people about health

While white coats can sometimes intimidate young children, the aim of this initiative is really to take the drama out of hospital examinations that children may have to undergo in the future," explains Carlota, ISS Vice President of ACM Corpo.

To complete the picture and make it more realistic, the students even prepared mini vital signs charts and mock health records !" explains Pauline, second VP ISS at ACM Corpo.

With such a device, there is no doubt that our little guests' teddy bears will come out in great shape!

Despite the announcement of lockdown, the Faculty's associations managed to support our students through this difficult time by organizing some fantastic initiatives throughout November. Focus on the November edition of Recap'assos!

The mustache takes center stage!

November is often associated with Movember, a movement that aims to raise awareness about men's health issues.

Our associations rallied together and shared their finest mustaches on social media while raising awareness about prostate cancer!

Positivity rhymes with activity!

We can't say it enough: exercise is good for your health! ASMM understands this well, offering twice-weekly exercise sessions on Zoom to stay connected with its members, which is essential for preventing isolation.

Revision and home schooling require good organization in order to achieve your goals. ASMM's live yoga sessions and AMESF's positive thinking have supported our students in this new way of working by providing them with a bubble of positive energy.

Actions taken!

The Crocos du Monde association was able to participate in outreach programs organized by Samu Solidaire to help the most disadvantaged and homeless people by offering them a hot meal and simply a little comfort.

November was also No Smoking Month. The AMESF marked the occasion with a campaign to raise awareness of the risks of smoking during pregnancy.

Your tutorials, closer than ever to you

Finally, we would like to conclude this article by highlighting the admirable continuity of service provided by your tutors, who did not fail in their mission during lockdown. By offering online tutoring sessions, remote tests, and even a virtual university library, your tutors once again demonstrated their creativity in supporting our PASS and PACES students as they approached their first-semester exams!

In addition, the tutors organized sharing sessions and a "parent tutorial" conference to support the parents of future PASS students. This initiative was greatly appreciated by the 50 families who attended this remote event.

Next event: Tutoscars, mock exams organized by UM's three talented health tutoring programs: ATSM, TSN, and ATP, on December 5 and 19 for PACES and PASS students.

Once again, our associations have made us proud of them, their actions, and our students. See you soon to find out what they have planned for December! #Proudofourstudents

Every year, the Pink October campaign raises awareness about breast cancer screening among as many people as possible. Our midwifery students and the associations in this field in Montpellier and Nîmes—AMESF and CNESF—are particularly committed to this cause.

In Montpellier, AMESF rallies behind the Ruban Rose association

Every year, AMESF participates in Pink October by organizing several activities. The goal? To raise awareness among students at the University of Montpellier about breast cancer screening. All this, of course, while raising as much money as possible for Ruban Rose, an association committed to the fight against breast cancer.

Awareness of self-examination

The first step in prevention is self-examination! To raise awareness among students about the right steps to take, AMESF held a booth at the Faculty of Medicine (ADV) and the Faculty of Sports Science (STAPS) on October 6, 7, and 8. Atthe STAPS faculty, the stand was run in collaboration with PESAP, the association for students studying for a Master's degree in Prevention, Health Education, and Physical Activity.

On the agenda: teaching students the correct self-examination techniques using a model provided by the University Department of Midwifery. Results: nearly 300 students were made aware of the issue!

And for those who are more shy, or for those who couldn't make it, AMESF has thought of everything with detailed posts on their social media accounts.

Fundraising

The AMESF's work does not stop there. The association actively supports Ruban Rose, the association for the fight against breast cancer, by donating the funds raised during their annual campaign.

This year, the association organized a raffle in addition to their usual stand selling treats. Thanks to their commitment and the many contributors to the raffle, the association has already raised over €500, which will be donated in full to the Ruban Rose association! This is a real success for our students, who have exceeded last year's donation amount.

Today, the association has set itself a new goal: to exceed €650 in donations to Ruban Rose! To help them achieve this, you can buy a raffle ticket for just €2.

➡️You can purchase raffle tickets:

📌At the association's office during office hours (1:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.)

📌Via the pumpkin ticket office:

The price of a ticket is €2 and the draw will take place on October 30.

In Nîmes, the CNESF crocodiles are committed to the League Against Cancer

Like its counterpart in Montpellier, the midwives' association in Nîmes is also getting involved in Pink October. Several initiatives are being organized to raise funds for the League Against Cancer.

Operation “Les Chauves d’Octobre Rose” (The Bald Ones of Pink October) in partnership with Corpo Médecine

On October 1, the CNESF joined forces with the CCC (Corpo Carabins Crocodiles) to carry out the "Les Chauves d'Octobre Rose" (Pink October Baldies) campaign.

The goal is twofold: to collect financial donations for the League Against Cancer, but also donations in kind in the form of long strands of hair for the Fake Hair Don't Care association. The latter will use the strands to make wigs for chemotherapy patients.

Excerpt from the stories of the Corpo Carabin Crocodiles about the "Shaved Heads" operation in collaboration with the CNESF

No fewer than eight volunteers agreed to have their hair cut on campus, raising over €420 for the League!

Awareness and prevention on social media

In parallel with this event, the CNESF published several prevention posts on social media. In order to raise awareness among as many people as possible, informative posters were published, as well as a questionnaire from the League on breast cancer screening. Feel free to test your knowledge—there are prizes to be won:

Show your support with a CNESF pin!

Finally, the CNESF is offering to show its support for the Pink October campaign by purchasing a beautiful pin specially designed for the occasion.

Valued at €2, it will allow you to show your support for the fight against breast cancer while doing a good deed: all funds will be donated in full to the League Against Cancer!

We've already raised €60! If you want to get your hands on one of these pins, don't wait too long—there are only about ten left in stock at the CNESF office...

A more than satisfactory overall result: #Proudofourstudents

The year 2020 and its unique circumstances did nothing to slow down our students' efforts. Thanks to joint initiatives by associations in Nîmes and Montpellier, nearly €1,000 was raised for cancer charities.

In addition, several hundred people were made aware of prevention measures against this disease thanks to various posters and visuals produced by the associations.

We are particularly proud of our students and would like to thank all the generous donors who contributed to the fundraisers organized by AMESF and CNESF.

Well done, everyone!

This week, we meet Justine Rizzo, president of the Montpellier midwifery student association, AMESF. Goals, actions, determination—find out everything you need to know about this association in this interview!

In a nutshell, what is AMESF?

AMESF is the student association for midwifery students in Montpellier. Our objectives are to represent midwifery students, offer services and entertainment to our members, and organize solidarity and humanitarian initiatives. To this end, we are members of several association networks. First at the local level with the AGEM, the General Association of Montpellier Students, but also nationally with the ANESF, the National Association of Midwifery Students.

What activities or actions do you implement throughout the year?

Several projects punctuate our year, some for entertainment, such as the end-of-year gala or the Concert en rose, which is a charity event for the Naître en Rose association.

Throughout the year, we also organize several charity events where our members can volunteer to help us run stands. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we raise awareness about breast cancer and collect funds for the association "Cancer du sein, Parlons-en!" (Let's talk about breast cancer!). We also participate in the Telethon and Sidaction charity events.

This year, a new project was launched for the first time: the "Endometriosis" project. It is particularly close to our hearts because this disease is little known, yet affects around 10% of women.  We visited several faculties in Montpellier to meet with many students and teachers who are not necessarily involved in the health sector (Faculty of Sciences, Paul Valéry University, and the Faculty of STAPS). We were able to provide information about this disease through flyers, quizzes/games, and a model containing a wealth of information. We ended the week by organizing a "film debate" conference on the subject at the Faculty of Medicine. Following a short film, a discussion took place between various healthcare professionals (midwives, gynecologists) and the audience. We were therefore able to raise awareness of this disease and also raise a significant amount of funds for the "EndoFrance" association's research .

Finally, we also collaborate with the French Blood Establishment. Every month, we raise awareness about blood, plasma, and bone marrow donation and announce the various collection locations through our publications.

Why did you personally choose midwifery as a field of study? In your opinion, what does the association offer students in this field?

What I like about being a midwife is being able to work in healthcare, helping families at a special time in their lives such as the birth of a child, and being able to accompany, support, and advise women throughout their lives. Being a midwife means having a wide range of skills and knowledge, including gynecology, pediatrics, and obstetrics. This profession requires a thorough understanding of female physiology and the ability to detect even the slightest problem.

The association provides students in this field with support, activities, and a certain curiosity about various issues. It also allows them to participate in various solidarity and humanitarian projects, as mentioned above. The association provides support to both newcomers and seniors in this field.

Why do you think people should join your association?

Membership offers many benefits, which we divide into various categories.

The education division
The entertainment division
The Student Services Department
The partnership division
The representation division
The solidarity division
It allows us to set up a system for sharing notes and handouts from classes in paper format. We also place bulk orders for books and materials for the courses.  It allows members to participate in the evenings we organize and to obtain preferential rates in certain restaurants, bars, and clubs in Montpellier. It is also an opportunity to develop a spirit of cohesion through our events such as the end-of-year gala. It provides access to "SOS Nounou," a system that connects midwifery students with parents looking for babysitters. We also offer the option of ordering affordable vegetable baskets. It allows our members to obtain discounted prices from our association's partners. It allows students to stay informed about the various debates and training sessions organized by AGEM and ANESF and to participate in them. It entitles members to participate in all the activities we carry out, such as those mentioned above.

How do you join?

By paying the €10 membership fee at the AMESF office, located on the Arnaud de Villeneuve Campus at 641 avenue du Doyen Gaston Giraud, Montpellier 34090.

Any student, regardless of their field of study, can join our association starting this year. They do not have access to all the benefits that midwifery students have, but they are welcome to attend our festive events, share their ideas, or participate in our various projects, for example!

A few words about the 2020-2021 board?

We have complete confidence in the next generation. Some wonderful things are planned, and we can't wait for them to implement all their projects!

In the meantime, you can find us on all our social media channels!
