This summer, the Montpellier Health Tutoring Association (ATSM) published a guide for international students. Available via a link provided at the bottom of this article, the guide covers many key points about settling in France, as well as plenty of advice that can be helpful when pursuing a degree in the health sciences.

Moving to a foreign country is never easy, especially when you’re unfamiliar with the various procedures and the assistance available to you. This guide is therefore intended to provide information to help international students get off to a good start this year.

Furthermore, since health-related programs are particularly demanding, it goes without saying that a comfortable living environment makes life easier for anyone pursuing these fields, especially since many of our health-related students in Montpellier have completed part of their high school or college education outside of France.

While the International Student Guide is intended to be comprehensive, the Vice President for Health, Social Affairs, and Student Support (VP SSA) at ATSM is available to answer any questions regarding the guide via email at: vpssa.atsm@gmail.com

This guide consists of several sections:

  • administrative procedures,
  • everyday life, particularly in Montpellier,
  • The First Year in Health: Testimonials and Contact Information for International Student Organizations.

The ATSM has made this guide available via the following Google Drive link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1QXf8MjVjjReJHWh94jjCszPElRBwk4Pe?usp=sharing

As they do every summer, the tutoring associations at the University of Montpellier (Montpellier Health Tutoring Association, Pharmacy Tutors Association, Nîmes Health Tutoring) are organizing a pre-semester workshop to help PASS and LAS students prepare as thoroughly as possible. This initiative aims to ease the transition into the academic year through introductory courses and guidance on study methods, while also promoting well-being and social life.

The SPR: A Key Asset for the Year

Participating in the SPR makes it easier to settle into the academic year. In fact, we offer both coursework and study skills sessions that help students avoid being caught off guard by the academic requirements of the PASS or LAS programs.

  • SPR PASS runs from Monday, August 22, through Saturday, September 3.
SPR LAS runs from Monday, August 29, through Wednesday, August 31.

The Pre-School Re-entry Workshop for PASS Students

For PASS students in the 2022–2023 academic year, the SPR will be held in person at the three campuses: Arnaud de Villeneuve (ATSM), Flahault (ATP), and Carémeau (TSN). The registration fee is €15, which coversthe cost of printing the handouts that will be distributed during the course. You must first register for the tutoring program, which is free and available year-round via the form accessible under the STUDIES AND TRAINING tab → PASS – LAS → TUTORING.

The SPR continues to be highly rated by students, the overwhelming majority of whom feel that the internship was beneficial to them, as shown in the statistics below!

All of our tutor teams are committed to making this orientation week both enjoyable and highly beneficial for the rest of the year. It’s also a great way to get a feel for campus life and form study groups for the rest of the year!

Our Back-to-School Camp will take place at three different locations:

  • ATSM: Arnaud de Villeneuve Site: 641 Avenue du Doyen Gaston Giraud, 34090 Montpellier
  • ATP: Flahault Site: 15 Charles Flahault Avenue, 34090 Montpellier
  • TSN: Carémeau Site: 186 Chemin du Carreau de Lanes, 30900 Nîmes

#ProudOfOurStudents – We’re in the news!

To help students prepare for their first year in the PASS and LAS programs, the health tutoring associations at the University of Montpellier (the Montpellier Health Tutoring Association, Nîmes Health Tutoring, and the Association of Pharmacy Tutors) are organizing a pre-semester orientation workshop to help students adjust to university life and gain a clear understanding of the year ahead.

The objectives of this internship

This workshop provides an opportunity to familiarize yourself with the key topics that will be covered in the first semester, to start finding your own work rhythm, and to gradually immerse yourself in a PASS or LAS program.

As a result, two separate SPRs will be organized:

  • FOR PASSES

A review course for PASS students, which will begin on August 23 and end on September 4 with a group exam.

  • FOR THE LAS

An orientation session for LAS students, scheduled for August 30 and 31, providing an introduction to the health minor.

The Pre-Semester Workshop for PASS Students

Registration for the PASS Pre-Semester Workshop costs €15, which covers the cost of printed handouts for the presentations. You must first register for the tutoring program; registration is free and open year-round (available here).

This SPR will take place from August 23 to September 4. It will be held in person at the respective locations of the three associations, namely:

ATSM

Arnaud de Villeneuve Site,

641 Doyen Gaston Avenue GIRAUD

34090 Montpellier

TSN

Carémeau Site,

186 Chemin du Carreau de Lanes

30,900 Nîmes

ATP

School of Pharmacy,

15 Charles FLAHAULT Avenue

Since getting started in healthcare studies in Montpellier can be daunting, the Montpellier Healthcare Tutoring Association (ATSM) offers a week-long internship and training program so that high school students can embark on these studies well-informed and well-prepared!

The program:

To mark High School Students’ Week, members ofthe Montpellier Health Tutoring Association have put together a comprehensive program designed to provide the best possible support not only to prospective medical students but also to their parents and the teaching staff at various high schools.

  • This week, dedicated to high school students, will take place from April 19 to 23, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., online via Zoom!

  • By the end of this completely free week, high school students will understand how the reform of admission to health-related programs (Medicine, Midwifery, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Physical Therapy, and Occupational Therapy under the PASS program) works!

  • The association also offers a training program designed for secondary school teaching staff to equip them with the skills needed to guide high school students in choosing their academic paths.

  • High school students will be fully informed about this year’s tutoring program, which offers academic and emotional support—completely free of charge and led by faculty members!

  • Members of the ATSM association will lead a workshop on preparing for college. The program will also include a panel discussion bringing together students who have successfully entered health-related programs, their parents, and high school students and their parents.

  • This week also includes students in 11th and 10th grade, with a comprehensive overview of the PASS and LAS programs and guidance on selecting specialized courses.

  • For seniors, tutors will review the key points of the high school curriculum that students need to master in order to ensure they have a solid foundation.

Practical information:

Despite the announcement of the lockdown, the Faculty’s student organizations managed to support our students through this difficult time by organizing some fantastic initiatives throughout the month of November. Check out the November edition of the student group recap!

Let’s celebrate the mustache!

November is often associated with Movember, a movement dedicated to raising awareness about men's health issues.

Our organizations got involved and shared photos of their best mustaches on social media while raising awareness about prostate cancer!

Positivity goes hand in hand with activity!

We can't say it enough: exercise is good for your health! The ASMM has taken this to heart by offering twice-weekly workout sessions via Zoom to stay connected with its members—something that remains essential for preventing isolation.

Studying and taking classes at home require good organization in order to achieve one’s goals. The ASMM’s live yoga sessions and the AMESF’s positive messages have supported our students in this new way of working by providing them with a burst of positive energy.

Actions taken!

The Crocos du Monde association was able to participate in the outreach efforts organized by Samu Solidaire to help the most disadvantaged and homeless by providing them with a hot meal and, quite simply, a little comfort.

November also marked National No-Smoking Month. AMESF took part in this initiative by launching an awareness campaign on the risks of smoking during pregnancy.

Your tutorials, there for you now more than ever

Finally, we’ll conclude this article by highlighting the seamless continuity of services provided by your tutoring teams, who remained steadfast in their mission throughout the lockdown. By offering online tutoring sessions, remote study groups, and even a virtual library, your tutors have once again demonstrated their creativity in supporting our PASS and PACES students as they prepare for their first-semester exams!

In addition, the tutors organized information sessions and a “parent workshop” to support the parents of prospective PASS students. This initiative was greatly appreciated by the 50 families who participated in this virtual event.

Upcoming event: the Tutoscars, mock exams organized by the UM’s three talented health tutoring groups— ATSM, TSN, and ATP—on December 5 and 19 for PACES and PASS students.

Once again, our student organizations have made us proud of them, their initiatives, and our students. Stay tuned to learn more about their activities this December! #ProudOfOurStudents
