This summer, the Montpellier Health Tutoring Association (ATSM) wrote a guide for international students. Available to read via a link at the bottom of this article, this guide covers many essential points about settling in France, as well as lots of useful advice for those embarking on health studies.

Moving to a foreign country is never easy, especially when you don't know what steps to take or what assistance is available. This guide is therefore intended to provide information to help international students get off to a good start at the beginning of the year.

Furthermore, as health studies are particularly demanding, it goes without saying that a good setup makes things easier for anyone embarking on these courses, given that many of our health students in Montpellier have completed part of their school or university education outside France.

The International Student Guide is intended to be comprehensive, but the Vice President in charge of Health, Social Affairs, and Support (VP HSS) at ATSM remains available to answer any questions about the guide via email: vpssa.atsm@gmail.com.

This guide consists of several parts:

  • administrative procedures,
  • practical life, particularly in Montpellier,
  • The first year in good health: testimonials and contact details for international student associations.

The ATSM provides this guide via the following Drive link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1QXf8MjVjjReJHWh94jjCszPElRBwk4Pe?usp=sharing

As they do every summer, the tutoring associations at the University of Montpellier (Montpellier Health Tutoring Association, Pharmacy Tutors Association, Nîmes Health Tutoring) are organizing a pre-term course to help PASS and LAS students prepare for the new academic year. This initiative aims to facilitate the start of the academic year with introductory courses and methodology training, while promoting well-being and social life.

The SPR, an asset for his year

Participating in the SPR makes it easier to immerse yourself in the academic year. We offer both course sessions and methodology sessions, which are useful for ensuring that you are not surprised by the working methods used in PASS or LAS.

  • SPR PASS runs from Monday, August 22 to Saturday, September 3.
SPR LAS runs from Monday, August 29 to Wednesday, August 31.

Pre-term training course for PASS students

For PASS students in the 2022/2023 academic year, the SPR will take place in person on the three campuses: Arnaud de Villeneuve (ATSM), Flahault (ATP), and Carémeau (TSN). The registration fee is €15, which coversthe cost of printing the handouts that will be distributed during the course. You must first register for tutoring, which is free of charge and available throughout the year via the form accessible in the STUDIES AND TRAINING → PASS – LAS → TUTORING tab .

The SPR continues to be highly popular among students, the overwhelming majority of whom consider the internship to have been beneficial, as shown in the statistics below!

All of our teams of tutors are committed to making this internship both enjoyable and useful for the rest of the year. It is also a great way to discover life at the faculty and to create study groups for the rest of the year!

Our Pre-Term Training Course therefore takes place at three different locations:

  • ATSM: Arnaud de Villeneuve site: 641 Avenue du Doyen Gaston Giraud, 34090 Montpellier
  • ATP: Flahault site: 15, Avenue Charles Flahault, 34090 Montpellier
  • TSN: Carémeau site: 186, Chemin du Carreau de Lanes, 30900 Nîmes

#ProudOfOurStudents – It's in the news!

In preparation for the PASS and LAS academic year, the health tutoring associations at the University of Montpellier (Association du Tutorat Santé de Montpellier, Tutorat Santé Nîmes, and Association des Tuteurs en Pharmacie) are organizing a pre-term internship to help students settle into university life and get a good understanding of the year ahead.

The objectives of this internship

This internship provides an opportunity to familiarize yourself with the key points of the courses that will be covered in the first semester, to start finding your own work rhythm, and to gradually immerse yourself in a year of PASS or LAS.

As a result, two separate SPRs will be organized:

  • FOR PASSES

An SPR for PASS students, which will begin on August 23 and end on September 4 with a joint exam.

  • FOR THE WEAK

An SPR for LAS students, scheduled for August 30 and 31, providing an introduction to the health minor.

Pre-term internship for PASS students

Registration for the PASS Pre-Term Course costs €15, which covers the cost of printed handouts for the slideshows presented. You must first register for tutoring, which is free and open all year round (accessible here).

This SPR will take place from August 23 to September 4. It will be held in person at the respective sites of the three associations, namely:

ATSM

Arnaud de Villeneuve site,

641 Doyen Gaston GIRAUD Avenue

34,090 Montpellier

TSN

Carémeau site,

186 Carreau de Lanes Road

30,900 Nîmes

ATP

School of Pharmacy,

15 Charles FLAHAULT Avenue

34,090 Montpellier

The in-person format of this course aims to facilitate students' initial contact with the university environment, with each other, and with the tutors with whom they will interact throughout the year.

As it can be difficult to understand what studying health sciences in Montpellier entails, the Montpellier Health Tutoring Association (ATSM) offers a week-long internship and training program so that high school students can embark on their studies fully informed and prepared!

The program:

During High School Student Week, members ofthe Montpellier Health Tutoring Association prepared a comprehensive program to provide the best possible support to future medical students, as well as their parents and teaching staff at various high schools.

  • This week, dedicated to high school students, will take place from April 19 to 23, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., online via Zoom!

  • At the end of this completely free week, high school students will understand how the reform of access to health studies (medicine, midwifery, pharmacy, dentistry, physical therapy, and occupational therapy for the PASS) works!

  • The association also offers training specifically for secondary school teaching staff, providing them with the tools they need to guide high school students in their career choices.

  • High school students will be kept up to date on the tutoring services available this year, which include academic and moral support, completely free of charge and supervised by faculty professors!

  • Members of the ATSM association will offer a session on methodology to help students prepare for higher education. A conference bringing together students who have successfully entered health studies, their parents, high school students, and their parents will also be on the program.

  • This week also extends to students in their junior and sophomore years with a comprehensive presentation of the PASS and LAS programs, including a discussion of the specialized courses to choose.

  • For seniors, tutors will review the key points of the high school curriculum that need to be mastered in order to ensure a solid foundation.

Practical information:

Despite the announcement of lockdown, the Faculty's associations managed to support our students through this difficult time by organizing some fantastic initiatives throughout November. Focus on the November edition of Recap'assos!

The mustache takes center stage!

November is often associated with Movember, a movement that aims to raise awareness about men's health issues.

Our associations rallied together and shared their finest mustaches on social media while raising awareness about prostate cancer!

Positivity rhymes with activity!

We can't say it enough: exercise is good for your health! ASMM understands this well, offering twice-weekly exercise sessions on Zoom to stay connected with its members, which is essential for preventing isolation.

Revision and home schooling require good organization in order to achieve your goals. ASMM's live yoga sessions and AMESF's positive thinking have supported our students in this new way of working by providing them with a bubble of positive energy.

Actions taken!

The Crocos du Monde association was able to participate in outreach programs organized by Samu Solidaire to help the most disadvantaged and homeless people by offering them a hot meal and simply a little comfort.

November was also No Smoking Month. The AMESF marked the occasion with a campaign to raise awareness of the risks of smoking during pregnancy.

Your tutorials, closer than ever to you

Finally, we would like to conclude this article by highlighting the admirable continuity of service provided by your tutors, who did not fail in their mission during lockdown. By offering online tutoring sessions, remote tests, and even a virtual university library, your tutors once again demonstrated their creativity in supporting our PASS and PACES students as they approached their first-semester exams!

In addition, the tutors organized sharing sessions and a "parent tutorial" conference to support the parents of future PASS students. This initiative was greatly appreciated by the 50 families who attended this remote event.

Next event: Tutoscars, mock exams organized by UM's three talented health tutoring programs: ATSM, TSN, and ATP, on December 5 and 19 for PACES and PASS students.

Once again, our associations have made us proud of them, their actions, and our students. See you soon to find out what they have planned for December! #Proudofourstudents
