  • OVERVIEW

    The Dual Degree Program in Medicine and Classical Sciences is a research-oriented master’s program offered to students in the health sciences—including medicine (residents and externs), midwifery, pharmacy, and dentistry—in conjunction with their initial training. 

    There are numerous close links between medical education—whether at the undergraduate, graduate, or postgraduate level—and research training through a two-year master’s program, which may or may not be followed by a three-year doctoral dissertation.

    Thus, regardless of how far along our students are in their health sciences program, they can enroll in a research training program where they will have the opportunity—and this is one of the major advantages of this dual program—to interact with students who are not enrolled in the health sciences program.

    For the vast majority of students, this supplementary research training begins with a first-year master’s program (M1), which they will start in either the first or second cycle, depending on their goals. This is the traditional dual track in medicine and the sciences. This dual program is made possible by the coordination of class schedules between the School of Medicine and the administrators of the many master’s programs focused on health sciences. Thus, Thursday afternoons are reserved for master’s-level courses.

The objectives of this program for our students are:

  • to understand the academic research environment in which the faculty is situated.
  • to realize, through interaction with the researchers and faculty members who will mentor them, their potential role in health research, which is inherently cross-cutting and transdisciplinary.

The development of MUSE has placed interdisciplinarity at the center of its calls for proposals; other master’s programs, such as the Master’s in Biomolecular Chemistry for Health and the Master’s in Pharmaceutical Sciences, will participate in this dual-degree program. Completion of two course units is complemented by a one-month introductory research internship. Although very short, it provides an opportunity to gain an understanding of the university research environment in which the faculty is embedded.

The goal is also for them to realize, through their interactions with the researchers and faculty members who will mentor them, the role they could play in health research, which is inherently cross-cutting and transdisciplinary.

One month is too short to train an intern in a scientific technique, and in the traditional dual-track program, it is only 3 to 5 years later—after completing the second cycle of medical studies—that the student, during a gap year in the course of their residency, will complete a second year of the master’s program (M2). This is contingent upon receiving a master’s scholarship, which may be awarded:

  • through learned societies,
  • Most often through the award of a research year, a contract signed between the student, the director of the Regional Health Agency, and the director of the University Hospital. The award is granted following an interview in early July, with the top candidates selected by a committee appointed by the scientific council.

Our department is fortunate to be well-funded, with an average of 16 research fellowships per year.

Recently, additional grants have been added, provided by MUSE as part of the “Key Initiative” (KIM)—notably “Bio markers & Therapy”—as well as others funded by our university hospital.

The total number of successful applicants each year is between 30 and 35 (50 to 70 percent of the applications submitted).

This traditional dual-track program works well in Montpellier and is therefore ideally suited for residents—future physicians who will view their medical practice as their primary occupation—as it integrates seamlessly with translational research.

The Internship

In this tab, you'll find all the information related to completing the internship, the internship search process, the process for drafting the internship agreement, objectives, and what you need to submit at the end of the internship.

The internship must be completed during the first or second cycle of health studies.It is scheduled to take place during the summer break for students, generally between their3rd and6th years of medical school.

Internship: 5 days a week (7 hours a day) for 4 weeks

(= 140 hours) , in July and August. It is possible to complete the internship in June, provided it does not interfere with the initial training.

Full-time attendance is mandatory unless lockdown measures or restrictions on access to research laboratories are implemented due to COVID-19.

During this internship, a mentor may supervise up to 3 students.

The educational objectives are to introduce students to and familiarize them with the principles of scientific research by:

  • compiling a bibliography
  • when proposing or evaluating an experimental protocol
  • possibly conducting supervised experiments
  • summarizing and presenting the results
  • An Introduction to Laboratory Research
  • Become familiar with the scientific and technical principles of research
  • Writing a Report

    After entering the agreement, the student must notify the Registrar’s Office for academic approval. As soon as the agreement is academically approved, thethe student can print it and begin the signature process.

  • Obtaining Your M1 Certificate of Completion

    The master's degree is a DN (National Diploma); each DN is subject to tuition regulations, and the Ministry announces the tuition amount at the start of each academic year.

    Students at DFASM3 and DSFA2 who wish to obtain their Master’s 1 completion certificate must submit the required documents to the Registrar’s Office in Montpellier or Nîmes.

    • a simple written request accompanied by a check for €166, made payable to the University’s accounting officer.
    • or, schedule an appointment by email at med-master@umontpellier.fr to pay by credit card.

    Once your administrative registration has been finalized and you have successfully completed the first year of the master’s program (2 course units or 4 course units plus the introductory research internship), your certificate of completion and transcript will be issued and made available to you at the Registrar’s Office. These documents can also be sent to you by email upon request.
