As they do every summer, the tutoring associations at the University of Montpellier (Montpellier Health Tutoring Association, Pharmacy Tutors Association, Nîmes Health Tutoring) are organizing a pre-semester workshop to help PASS and LAS students prepare as thoroughly as possible. This initiative aims to ease the transition into the academic year through introductory courses and guidance on study methods, while also promoting well-being and social life.

The SPR: A Key Asset for the Year

Participating in the SPR makes it easier to settle into the academic year. In fact, we offer both coursework and study skills sessions that help students avoid being caught off guard by the academic requirements of the PASS or LAS programs.

  • SPR PASS runs from Monday, August 22, through Saturday, September 3.
SPR LAS runs from Monday, August 29, through Wednesday, August 31.

The Pre-School Re-entry Workshop for PASS Students

For PASS students in the 2022–2023 academic year, the SPR will be held in person at the three campuses: Arnaud de Villeneuve (ATSM), Flahault (ATP), and Carémeau (TSN). The registration fee is €15, which coversthe cost of printing the handouts that will be distributed during the course. You must first register for the tutoring program, which is free and available year-round via the form accessible under the STUDIES AND TRAINING tab → PASS – LAS → TUTORING.

The SPR continues to be highly rated by students, the overwhelming majority of whom feel that the internship was beneficial to them, as shown in the statistics below!

All of our tutor teams are committed to making this orientation week both enjoyable and highly beneficial for the rest of the year. It’s also a great way to get a feel for campus life and form study groups for the rest of the year!

Our Back-to-School Camp will take place at three different locations:

  • ATSM: Arnaud de Villeneuve Site: 641 Avenue du Doyen Gaston Giraud, 34090 Montpellier
  • ATP: Flahault Site: 15 Charles Flahault Avenue, 34090 Montpellier
  • TSN: Carémeau Site: 186 Chemin du Carreau de Lanes, 30900 Nîmes

A wellness week for PASS and LAS students

To wrap up the exams for the first semester and help students better prepare for the second, the Montpellier Health Tutoring Association (ATSM) is organizing the 2022 edition of Pep’s Week for PASS and LAS students!

Winner of the Montpellier Student Initiative Award from 2018 to 2020 and highly popular among students, Pep’s Week is a project that is very close to our hearts, and we hope to bring it back this year under the name “Pep’s Week.”

This week is dedicated to the well-being and relaxation of first-year students (PASS and LAS). To this end, the ATSM is organizing numerous activities in partnership with students from various programs to best support first-year students by providing them with psychological and academic support. Promoting this sense of well-being is a key objective, one that has become essential since the start of the health crisis.

The 2022 edition, January 24–28

Pep’s Week will take place from January 24 to 28, 2022. During this week, the ATSM will host a variety of activities every lunchtime at the Montpellier Faculty of Medicine on the ADV Campus (641 Avenue du Doyen Gaston Giraud), featuring qualified speakers and opportunities for students and tutors to interact and share ideas.

For this new edition, the theme is “Japan”; participants will receive a Welcome Pack filled with exclusive goodies related to ATSM’s partnerships.

Practical information:

Despite the announcement of the lockdown, the Faculty’s student organizations managed to support our students through this difficult time by organizing some fantastic initiatives throughout the month of November. Check out the November edition of the student group recap!

Let’s celebrate the mustache!

November is often associated with Movember, a movement dedicated to raising awareness about men's health issues.

Our organizations got involved and shared photos of their best mustaches on social media while raising awareness about prostate cancer!

Positivity goes hand in hand with activity!

We can't say it enough: exercise is good for your health! The ASMM has taken this to heart by offering twice-weekly workout sessions via Zoom to stay connected with its members—something that remains essential for preventing isolation.

Studying and taking classes at home require good organization in order to achieve one’s goals. The ASMM’s live yoga sessions and the AMESF’s positive messages have supported our students in this new way of working by providing them with a burst of positive energy.

Actions taken!

The Crocos du Monde association was able to participate in the outreach efforts organized by Samu Solidaire to help the most disadvantaged and homeless by providing them with a hot meal and, quite simply, a little comfort.

November also marked National No-Smoking Month. AMESF took part in this initiative by launching an awareness campaign on the risks of smoking during pregnancy.

Your tutorials, there for you now more than ever

Finally, we’ll conclude this article by highlighting the seamless continuity of services provided by your tutoring teams, who remained steadfast in their mission throughout the lockdown. By offering online tutoring sessions, remote study groups, and even a virtual library, your tutors have once again demonstrated their creativity in supporting our PASS and PACES students as they prepare for their first-semester exams!

In addition, the tutors organized information sessions and a “parent workshop” to support the parents of prospective PASS students. This initiative was greatly appreciated by the 50 families who participated in this virtual event.

Upcoming event: the Tutoscars, mock exams organized by the UM’s three talented health tutoring groups— ATSM, TSN, and ATP—on December 5 and 19 for PACES and PASS students.

Once again, our student organizations have made us proud of them, their initiatives, and our students. Stay tuned to learn more about their activities this December! #ProudOfOurStudents

After meeting with Tutorat Santé Nîmois, this week we’re joining forces with the Association Tutorat Santé de Montpellier and its new president, Milla Esclafit-Cardoso!

In a nutshell, what is the AssociationTutorat Santé Montpellier?

The Tutoring Program consists of second- and third-year health sciences students who have passed the PACES entrance exam and have been selected and trained for one year by the professors in charge of the program. Our goal is to provide free, high-quality academic and personal support to any student at the University of Montpellier and its branch campuses who wishes to pursue a career in healthcare. To meet this need, three associations are available to assist you: the Montpellier Health Tutoring Association, the Association of Pharmacy Tutors, and the Nîmes Health Tutoring Program.

These three organizations pool their resources to provide equitable support to all students and share a common goal of ensuring equal opportunity in the admissions process for health-related programs.

What activities or initiatives do you organize throughout the year?

To start the year off on the right foot, we’re offering a Pre-Semester Workshop open this year to all PACES and PASS students: its goal is to review the entire first-semester curriculum, help students develop effective study habits, and introduce them to the university so they can find their footing.

Each week, we review the key points from each course across all subjects through multiple-choice quizzes supervised by professors; these sessions are offered at several different times so that students can tailor their schedules to their availability. To help students with their questions, office hours are held every day at noon on campus, and a forum is also available to students.

To ensure regular and representative assessment, we hold weekly graded quizzes attended by approximately 900 students across our three campuses, as well as mock exams, which this year saw more than 1,600 students participate in the first semester.

To adapt to the lockdown situation and health guidelines, we held our sessions and review sessions online via Zoom, which we recorded so that PACES students with unstable internet connections could watch them. We also expanded our YouTube channel to diversify our remote learning content, focusing on parts of the course that we felt were difficult to understand.

In addition to academic support, we help students navigate a demanding year by promoting activities focused on well-being, such as board game lunches and relaxation workshops… Our biggest wellness event is Pep’s Week, which takes place in early January—a particularly difficult time for PACES students. To help first-year students connect with upperclassmen, we establish a student mentoring program right at the start of the year.

To further promote equal opportunity, the Tutoring Service works withHandiversité to offer a disability support service for students who need accommodations during sessions or exams.

Finally, as part of the reform process, we serve as key points of contact both within the university—by organizing career guidance forums—and at the local level through various student fairs, as well as at the national level by participating in conferences that bring together tutoring programs from across France.

What made you decide to join the organization?

Tutoring helped me pass my PACES exam by supporting me over the course of two years: this support was incredibly valuable to me because I couldn’t afford to pay for the services of a private tutoring agency. The tutors’ availability, the quality of the sessions, and above all the support in every aspect of PACES life (studying, lifestyle, morale…) really helped me get through this challenging period. It was a no-brainer for me to apply to be a tutor after I was admitted to my second year of medical school, so I was thrilled to join the UE7 team (Health, Humanities, Society). My year as a trainee tutor was so fulfilling that I wanted to continue the journey by joining the Tutoring Office to help revitalize it during the year of the reform: so we changed our name from the Montpellier Medical Tutoring Association (ATM²) to the Montpellier Health Tutoring Association (ATSM) to better reflect our commitment to diversifying the profiles of incoming students across all health programs!

What does the association offer students?

Beyond mere academic guidance, our goal is to provide genuine support to all young adults who are navigating university studies, life away from home, and a very demanding workload. Our core value is equal opportunity, ensuring that selection for this first year is based on academic ability rather than financial circumstances. This aligns more broadly with our duty of camaraderie—a value we hold dear in the healthcare professions—and with our training, which is largely based on peer-to-peer learning. We are, after all, students ourselves who have gone through this experience and are trying to help PACES students just as we needed help when we were in their shoes!

Why do you think someone should join your organization?

In the first year, students can sign up for tutoring free of charge at any time throughout the year: attendance is not mandatory, but according to faculty surveys, attending 80% of the tutoring sessions is the best way to succeed on the entrance exam!

If you wish to join the ATSM as a tutor, you will have the opportunity to be selected based on your application and an interview after your second-semester grades are released. You will then hold the status of Trainee Tutor during your second year and may continue as a Qualified Tutor when you advance to your third year.

A few words about the 2020–2021 board?

The General Assembly to inaugurate our new executive board took place on June 9: we are all very excited to renew our commitment to supporting students repeating PACES, PASS, and LAS. We know that this year can be daunting for recent high school graduates, and we are ready to support them through this transition.

We are in the process of changing our name, so for now our old name is still showing up on social media:
