A few weeks after our IPAs (Advanced Practice Nurses), it's the turn of our medical students to experience their Graduation Ceremony.

A ceremony traditionally held at the Jardin des Plantes

Traditionally held at the Jardin des Plantes on the 3rd weekend of September, this ceremony is an opportunity for our students' families and friends to (re)discover the faculty through a private tour of the premises in the company of our teachers, before applauding our new graduates!

A rite of passage to 3rd cycle medical studies

The students present at this ceremony have completed their first two cycles of study (6 years). They enter the 3rd cycle and become interns in one of the medical/surgical specialties, in Montpellier or in other cities.

We wish them all the best for their future careers! Congratulations to all!

SPES is a project in environmental healthe for interns in general medicine. It is one of the winners of the call for projects launched by ARS Occitanie as part of the 3rd Plan Régional Santé-Environnement (Regional Health-Environment Plan). After a frankc success, ARS proposed a multi-year contract of objectives and resources for a 3-year period.

SPES is always organized in 3 stages:

The back-to-school period is often synonymous with reflection and renewal. It's a time when many people are thinking about their future prospects, and it's the perfect time to consider a continuing education project! We'd like to take this opportunity to introduce you to one of our 198 DUs and DIUs: the DU de la Cellule Normale à la Cellule Tumorale. To do so, we set out to meet the two co-directors of this DU, Ms. Szablewski and Mr. Ramirez. Interview.

Ms Szablewski, Mr Ramirez, good morning. Could you briefly introduce yourselves?

VS: I'm Dr Vanessa Szablewski, MCU-PH in Pathological Anatomy and Cytology at Montpellier University Hospital. I specialize in hematopathology and ENT pathology. For my research activity, I'm attached to theUMR 1058 INSERM Pathogenesis and control of chronic and emerging infections. My research focuses on the role of Human Papilloma Viruses (HPVs) in cancers of the ENT sphere.

JMR: I obtained my PhD in Biological Sciences for Health in 2005. After obtaining my thesis, I did several post-doctoral studies abroad, in the USA in Washington DC, in Switzerland at the University Hospital of Geneva, in Spain at the CIC(Centro d'investigation contra el cancer) and finally returned to France at the IRMB in Montpellier. In 2015, I was recruited as a lecturer at the Faculté de Médecine Montpellier-Nîmes in Professor Thierry Lavabre-Bertrand's department, where I teach histology and cell biology. In 2019, Vanessa and I created the 1st virtual slide site combining three disciplines: anatomy, pathological anatomy and histology.

You are both in charge of the "From the Normal Cell to the Tumor Cell" DU, what prompted you to create this course?

JMR: Histology and pathological anatomy are two closely related disciplines, and I felt that it was essential for a researcher in the healthcare field to know both histology (the study of tissues) and pathological tissues.

Who is this training primarily intended for? How long does it last?

VS: This course is aimed at all researchers working in the field of oncology, as well as those wishing to learn more about human body tissues and their associated pathologies. It is also aimed at doctors wishing to follow a research career path, or at oncology physicians wishing to acquire a basic understanding of scientific oncology. The course takes place over one academic year, but classes are held between February and June. The program includes 52 hours of teaching, divided into 6 modules.

What added value will future graduates derive from this training? Does it open up new career paths for those enrolled?

JMR: First and foremost, for future doctors or researchers in the field of oncology, the added value is the acquisition of new fundamental skills to be better equipped to carry out their duties. Then, for all future doctors, to be able to better interpret the medical results established by a doctor specializing in pathological anatomy.

This year, on the occasion of the Journées du Patrimoine, La Mission Bern, in partnership with the Fondation pour le Patrimoine and the Française des Jeux, will present the Jardins des Plantes teams with the cheque awarded thanks to the Loto du Patrimoine! In the afternoon, a program of free guided tours awaits visitors.

The Jardin des Plantes, selected by the Heritage Lotto

Last March, we learned that the Jardin des Plantes had been chosen by the Mission Patrimoine, entrusted to Stéphane Bern by the French Ministry of Culture, from among 18 other French sites to receive support from the Loto du Patrimoine. In addition to national visibility, this program will give the Intendance du Jardin des Plantes a major boost for its renovation, work on which is due to begin shortly.

To celebrate, the Jardin des Plantes is hosting a delegation from Mission Patrimoine and La Française des Jeux for the European Heritage Days. A prize-giving ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 17 at the Jardin des Plantes. The ceremony, attended by Mr Lloberes, FDJ Regional Director for the South-East region, Mr Pradel, FDJ Area Manager for Hérault Nord Aveyron and Mr Genet, Regional Delegate for the Fondation du Patrimoine in Occitanie-Méditerranée, will unveil the Mission's support for the Intendance renovation project.

An afternoon dedicated to guided tours!

To celebrate Heritage Days, our teams of gardeners and teachers are offering several guided tours. Free of charge and without reservation, they are given in small groups of 15 to 20 people. So plan to arrive a few minutes in advance to ensure a place. In fine weather, a bottle of water and a hat are highly recommended!

See the day's program below.

NB: This year, the Bâtiment Historique will not be opening its doors due to renovation work.

We talked about it

It's always an emotional moment for the students, their families and our teams. On Wednesday September 7, 2022, we celebrated the graduation of our 22 new advanced practice nurses. The ceremony took place in an intimate setting in the historic building.

Congratulations to our new graduating class

The DE IPA (Diplôme d'Etat d'Infirmier.e en Pratique Avancée) is a two-year course, delivered by the Montpellier-Nîmes Faculty of Medicine since 2020. Each year, just over twenty students pursue these studies. They enable qualified nurses (candidates for the DE IPA must have at least 3 years' experience) to acquire broader skills, with the aim of improving the follow-up of patients with chronic pathologies.

On Wednesday September 7, we celebrated the graduation of the class of 2022. After speeches by each graduate present, the ceremony was appropriately marked by the traditional toque toss! Congratulations to all our graduates! The teams at the Faculty of Medicine wish you all the best for the rest of your professional career.
