On Monday August 17, 2020, the Faculty officially blew out its 800 candles! Here's a look back at an event marked by sharing and conviviality.
800 years of history, tradition and excellence
The ceremony begins at the top of the Cour d'Honneur steps. Teachers and students, decked out in their finest ceremonial attire, enter this historic venue alongside :
- Philippe Augé, President of the University of Montpellier;
- from the Dean of the Faculty, Michel Mondain ;
- the Chairman of the Steering Committee, Thierry Lavabre-Bertrand.
We were of course able to count on the presence and participation of representatives of local and regional authorities:
- Mr Christian Assaf for the Occitanie Region,
- Mr Renaud Calvat for the Hérault department,
- Mr Michaël Delafosse for the Metropole and the City of Montpellier
- and Sophie Béjean, Rectrice of the Montpellier Academy and the Occitanie Region.
To get the ceremony off to an auspicious start, Prof. Chanques and Bailiff Eddy Lamou presented the audience with our Ceremonial Mace, a symbolic object of the Faculty. Representing a staff of Aesculapius, this mace represents the threat that awaits doctors who fail to respect the Hippocratic oath.

It was then the turn of Prof. Valérie Rigau, the youngest member of the Board of Management, and Allan Guilley, a medical student and president of ACHEMM (the student association dedicated to the Faculty's 800th anniversary), to read a translation of the Faculty's original statutes, recalling their historical and symbolic value.
These statutes were enacted on August 12, 1220 by the legate of Pope Honorius III, Cardinal Conrad d'Urach. Since then, the teaching of medicine has never ceased to exist in Montpellier, creating strong links with the city, as President Augé and Dean Mondain recalled in their speeches.

A faculty proud of its past, looking to the future
800 years later, the Faculty and its community are proud to blow out this new candle. To mark the occasion, a commemorative plaque was unveiled. A way of honouring the illustrious figures who have shaped our faculty, while continuing to write our history.
A history which, as current events demonstrate, will undoubtedly be full of challenges! Challenges that will in no way change the Faculty's mission: we'll be there to support and train tomorrow's healthcare professionals.

A full-scale survey
The historic building will be the setting for a life-size game. Fans of Cluedo and detective series, don your best investigator's costume to unravel the mysteries of the Troupe du Manoir!

1935. The press reports the body of the famous surgeon discovered dead in the office of his home, locked from the inside. But it was not suicide. The police investigate, and their inquiries soon lead our two investigators to the Faculty of Medicine in Montpellier. What lies behind this cleverly disguised murder? What will our two investigators discover? Will they dare to delve into the mysteries of the history of the Faculty of Medicine?
Join us for a new-format Crime Night in the heart of our Faculty's impressive anatomical collection!
On this special day, the challenge is on. The longest plot ever written by the Troupe du Manoir will have to be solved. To achieve this, it will be divided into 2 chapters.
A first series of teams can solve Chapter I from 4 pm to 6:30 pm. These same teams will have to pass on everything they have discovered to the teams who have come to solve Chapter II, over a meal (under cover of a police inspector). Armed with this information, the new investigators will have to uncover all the mysteries of Montpellier's Faculty of Medicine.
A registered event
Two sessions are proposed, including a buffet lunch:
The first will run from 4pm to 6:30pm. The second will be from 8pm to 10:30pm. Lunch from 18h45 to 19h45.
Rates :
Session 1 OR Session 2 with meal: €40
Session 1 AND Session 2 with meal: €60
