This year, as part of Heritage Days, La Mission Bern, in partnership with the Fondation pour le Patrimoine and La Française des Jeux, will present the Jardins des Plantes team with a check funded by the Heritage Lottery! In the afternoon, a program of free guided tours awaits visitors.

The Jardin des Plantes, selected by the Heritage Lottery

As we learned last March, the Jardin des Plantes was selected by the Mission Patrimoine—a program entrusted to Stéphane Bern by the Ministry of Culture along with 18 other French sites to receive funding from the Loto du Patrimoine. In addition to providing significant national exposure, this program will give the Jardin des Plantes administration a much-needed boost for its renovation, with work expected to begin shortly.

To celebrate this occasion, the Jardin des Plantes will host a delegation from Mission Patrimoine and La Française des Jeux during European Heritage Days. An awards ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m. this Saturday, September 17, at the Jardin des Plantes. This ceremony, attended by Mr. Lloberes, FDJ Regional Director for the Southeast, Mr. Pradel, FDJ Manager for the Hérault Nord Aveyron sector, and Mr. Genet, Regional Delegate for Occitanie-Méditerranée for the Fondation du Patrimoine, will unveil the support provided by the Mission to the Intendance renovation project.

An afternoon filled with guided tours!

To celebrate Heritage Days, our teams of gardeners and teachers are offering—for once—several guided tours. These tours are free and do not require reservations; they are conducted in small groups of 15 to 20 people. Be sure to arrive a few minutes early to secure a spot. If the weather is nice, a bottle of water and a hat are highly recommended!

See the schedule for the day below.

Note: This year, the Historic Building will not be open to the public due to renovation work.

We've talked about it

It’s always an emotional moment for the students, their loved ones, and our staff. On Wednesday, September 7, 2022, we celebrated the graduation of our 22 new advanced practice nurses. The ceremony took place in an intimate setting within the Historic Building.

Congratulations to our newest class of graduates

The DE IPA (State Diploma in Advanced Practice Nursing) is a two-year program offered by the Montpellier-Nîmes Faculty of Medicine since 2020. Each year, just over twenty students enroll in the program. It enables licensed nurses (DE IPA candidates must have at least three years of experience) to acquire advanced skills with the goal of improving the care of patients with chronic conditions.

On Wednesday, September 7, we celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2022. After each graduate in attendance gave a speech, the ceremony was marked, as is tradition, by the tossing of the caps! Congratulations to all our graduates! The staff of the Faculty of Medicine wish you all the best in your future careers.

As they do every summer, the tutoring associations at the University of Montpellier (Montpellier Health Tutoring Association, Pharmacy Tutors Association, Nîmes Health Tutoring) are organizing a pre-semester workshop to help PASS and LAS students prepare as thoroughly as possible. This initiative aims to ease the transition into the academic year through introductory courses and guidance on study methods, while also promoting well-being and social life.

The SPR: A Key Asset for the Year

Participating in the SPR makes it easier to settle into the academic year. In fact, we offer both coursework and study skills sessions that help students avoid being caught off guard by the academic requirements of the PASS or LAS programs.

  • SPR PASS runs from Monday, August 22, through Saturday, September 3.
SPR LAS runs from Monday, August 29, through Wednesday, August 31.

The Pre-School Re-entry Workshop for PASS Students

For PASS students in the 2022–2023 academic year, the SPR will be held in person at the three campuses: Arnaud de Villeneuve (ATSM), Flahault (ATP), and Carémeau (TSN). The registration fee is €15, which coversthe cost of printing the handouts that will be distributed during the course. You must first register for the tutoring program, which is free and available year-round via the form accessible under the STUDIES AND TRAINING tab → PASS – LAS → TUTORING.

The SPR continues to be highly rated by students, the overwhelming majority of whom feel that the internship was beneficial to them, as shown in the statistics below!

All of our tutor teams are committed to making this orientation week both enjoyable and highly beneficial for the rest of the year. It’s also a great way to get a feel for campus life and form study groups for the rest of the year!

Our Back-to-School Camp will take place at three different locations:

  • ATSM: Arnaud de Villeneuve Site: 641 Avenue du Doyen Gaston Giraud, 34090 Montpellier
  • ATP: Flahault Site: 15 Charles Flahault Avenue, 34090 Montpellier

On June 1, 2022, the School of Geriatrics and Gerontology was officially inaugurated in the Faculty of Medicine’s Historic Building. We were thus able to celebrate this achievement in the presence of Isabelle Laffont, Dean of the Faculty; Jacques Mercier, Vice President ofthe University of Montpellier; and Nicole Marin-Khoury, Deputy Mayor of the City of Montpellier.

A school unlike any other in France…

This project, led by Professor Claude Jeandel, Director of the School of Geriatrics and Gerontology; Dr. Stéphanie Miot, his Deputy Director; Ms. Myriam Aggoun, the school’s Administrative Director; and Ms. Marie-Laure Portalez, a research engineer, is the first school of its kind in France.

In fact, this school was founded in response to a societal reality: we are facing a significant demographic challenge. This challenge is reflected in an aging population and a rise in the number of people with reduced independence (2.45 million in 2060, compared to 1.6 million in 2030). Offering tailored gerontology training programs for students and professionals in the field has become essential in light of these societal, medical, and scientific challenges.

In order to provide a cross-disciplinary and holistic approach to issues related to advanced age, a diverse range of training programs has been developed, featuring innovative teaching methods across the sector’s various fields of application (medical, epidemiological, psychological, legal, etc.).

… and innovative

Developed as part of the IDEFI-TIL program (Initiatives of Excellence in Innovative Training – Trans Innov Longevity), which was launched in 2014 at the Faculty, the gerontology training programs offered by the Faculty of Medicine have already enabled many professionals in the medical and paramedical fields to specialize in this area.

Innovation is a top priority for the School of Geriatrics and Gerontology, which offers training programs tailored to e-learning formats. These simulation workshops  are also held once a year. Finally, tutoring is provided by alumni from the various programs.

In addition, older adults will be involved in teaching, and certain training programs will be designed for them as part of therapeutic education.

4 major training areas

  • A center for healthcare professionals

Intended for professionals in the health and social services sector.

  • A center for physicians and medical students

Academic Coordination of Medical School Course Units

  • A center for family caregivers

    Training, awareness-raising, and support initiatives

  • A center for patients

Training on Chronic Diseases and Patient Education

La Marseillaise: A School of Geriatrics and Gerontology in Montpellier

For the 19thth edition of “Rendez-vous aux Jardins,” gardeners and botanists welcome you from across Europe to explore the theme “Gardens in the Face of Climate Change.” The event, organized by the Ministry of Culture, will take place from Friday, June 3, to Sunday, June 5, 2022. And here’s some good news: the Jardin Des Plantes in Montpellier will be participating for two days.

What exactly is “Rendez-vous aux jardins”?

Starting Friday, June 3, nearly 2,200 gardens will open their gates, offering moments of joy and discovery. It’s an opportunity to share with family and friends through a wide range of activities. Throughout the weekend, visitors will be able to interact with experts on nature conservation measures, with the goal of raising awareness about the protection of biodiversity, which is essential to the well-being of all living things. Furthermore, in recent years, thanks to successful European cooperation, many countries have joined the initiative, including Germany, Portugal, Croatia, Italy, Poland, and France. This is an opportunity to discover splendid gardens, including the Jardin des Plantes at the Montpellier Faculty of Medicine.

And what's the situation like at the Jardin des Plantes?

The Jardin des Plantes at the Montpellier Faculty of Medicine is opening its doors this year for its 19th annual event. In groups of 25, you’ll explore the garden’s iconic sites through 14 guided tours, focusing on recurring themes such as “Bees and Humans in 2022,” “Herbs and the Five Senses Plots,” or general tours. All passionate about botany, our five gardener-botanists—who will don the role of guides for the duration of the weekend—will present how plants are adapting to climate change in their respective areas. The goal of these two days is to foster interaction between our gardeners-botanists and the general public, as well as to raise awareness among young people and adults alike about preserving and promoting the Faculty’s Jardin des Plantes. An iconic site in Montpellier, come discover it with fresh eyes. We look forward to seeing many of you there!

The Teddy Bear Hospital is back in 2022! To learn all about this meaningful and heartwarming awareness campaign, read this article!

LHealth students in Montpellier are joining forces for a meaningful initiative

As we have done every year since 2002, our students in the medicine, midwifery, and speech-language pathology programs (through the student associations ACM, AMESF and Dislalia), are teaming up with students in the pharmacy, dentistry, physical therapy, and occupational therapy programs to organize an event that is as unique for its charm as it is for its usefulness: the Teddy Bear Hospital.

The concept? Healthcare students welcome preschoolers from underprivileged neighborhoods to introduce them to the hospital environment and health checkups through a fun role-playing activity: their stuffed animals will be the patients for the day!

A mini cross-disciplinary care program for stuffed animals

The event, which will take place this year from March 28 to April 1, will feature a mini medical clinic for children’s stuffed animals, spread across 12 preschool classrooms. A real “mini-hospital”!

The program features no fewer than 15 multidisciplinary care booths! To prepare for working with children, the students running the booths received special training from a child psychiatrist at the Montpellier University Hospital.

Booths run by medical students (ACM)

  • Pulmonology – Cardiology
  • Radiology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Dermatology
  • Gastroenterology
  • General Medicine
  • Anesthesia and Surgery
  • Emergencies
  • Nutrition – Sports Medicine – Environmental Medicine

Booth run by the maieutics students (AMESF)

  • Vaccination Information Booth

Booth run by speech-language pathology students (DISLALIA)

  • Booth on sign language, hearing, and attention

Booths run by students from other health-related programs:

  • Pharmacy: Medications and Lice
  • Dental: dental care
  • Occupational Therapy: Raising Awareness About Disabilities
  • Physical Therapy: Balance Training

Goal: To make the hospital environment less intimidating and promote health education

While white coats can sometimes intimidate young children, the goal of this initiative is really to make hospital exams that children may have to undergo in the future seem less daunting” explains Carlota, ISS Vice President of ACM Corpo.

To round out the picture and make it feel more real, the students even prepared mini health insurance cards and mock health records !” explains Pauline, second VP ISS of ACM Corpo.

With a setup like this, there’s no doubt that our little guests’ teddy bears will come out in great shape!
